This is an extract from an email i received from VW after i asked about 3 door GT Sport in Australia -
"Sorry that it has taken so long to reply, the answer really is to check for the availability of this particular 3 door version of the VW Golf sport with the local VW dealership as this model will be available in Australia very soon. www.volkswagen.com.au will give you all of the phone numbers for the VW dealerships in Australia."
So it's on it's way!!
Too late for me i ordered a GTI (with latte leather).
Can't really say what fuel economy is yet as my wife is the driver and she is still on the first tank of fuel. I drove it for the first time yesterday and was mighty impressed with the way it pulls and the lack of torque steer you get.

GT does look like a good purchase...whats sort of fuel economy are u guys getting?
Well my wife and I took the GT out on the weekend and I noticed that since she picked it up she has driven 310 kms and yet the petrol guage says there is still over 1/2 tank remaining! Holly crap this car goes hard and drinks bugger all juice!

Sh*t, nav - 5000rpm in 6th would be about 200kph!!
At 100k's it's in the 2-3000 rpm range. And that's right smack in the middle of the supercharger/turbo 'handshake'. It's actually the nicest part of the rev range! Plant your clog and it just launches. Honest, given 15mins behind the wheel and you'll forget all about its capacity. It doesn't even sound like a tiny four pot.
Having been on a long drive (Melb to Syd and back, 3 people 1 way, boot fully loaded), the car sits at just shy of 3krpm at 110km/h speed.
Yes I would agree 2-3000 is the sweet rpm range, but that really only applies for gears 2 - 5, on 6... nothing happens. I absolutely tried to floor it in 6th to do some overtaking and to my painful surprise, the car did perform as I had expected, dropped it into 5th and got a lot more response in acceleration. I'm thinking 4th gear would be the best for acceleration in the low 100km/h range and then 5th gear for speeds higher than that.
Even the car's max speed is achieved on 5th gear rather than 6th.
Back on topic, I really like the UG colour with the new grill, they go really well together. And jealous that your MY08 has mp3 compatible cd player
I contacted VW to see if I can trade in the deck from my MY07 (only a few months old) for the one used in the MY08 and they said no They quoted ~$700 for a new deck, which I kindly refused

I'd have to agree after some longer trips of my own - the DSG seems a bit reluctant to kick down from 6th at higher speeds
I've discovered that if you want to overtake a semi quickly at highway speeds you're best to pull the shifter back into S and tromp it. Boy, it sure goes then!
As for the top speed, you're right - 5th is overdrive (<1:1) and 6th is even taller. I'm yet to get my head around it yet, but apparently it has two final drive ratios - one for 1st to 4th , the other for 5th & 6th Maybe this is why it launches out of 4th so much better than from 5th? Dunno. Something for the Ratio Geeks to pick up and run with.
BTW, apparently 5th is 0.87:1 & 6th is 0.73:1, with Final drive 1 being 4.06 & Final 2 being 3.14. This is the point where I glaze over
