  • Tinting thread

One of the issues in buying a new car is to tint the windows. I've seen a few threads with queries on tinting but really not one that covers all the aspects.

So....can people pls reply to this one with pics of their tints (I've seen VCL888's tint at night, but looks mint with the visor tinting on the front window ), and details of what you got and how much it cost.

It's coming time where I should make a decision on how to tint the car. Really looking for the metallic reflecting look.

    Thanks

Good on ya mate, appreciate the dedicated thread to this 'pressing' question

BTW, if anyone is looking for a tint job that the VW dealers offer, I sourced a place that does if for some of the dealers. Going direct will cost you 1/3 what the dealer charges.

I'm hoping to see some pics and get some ideas for unique tint options, but in the absence of that, I'll probably roll with the ICT - glassy metallic tint option.

This shop is in Melbourne - I wasn't going to post their business name on the open internet, so it doesn't affect their business with the dealers.

IE - "Hey Ms Add-on Saleslady, I'm not going to pay you $800 to tint my windows, because I know you are getting them done down the street at XYZ Tint, and I can go their direct for the same thing that you claim is offered through dealers only" ...

Shoot me a private message if you are still interested in the name and details, if you can respect keeping it off the internet

They are not a chain, just a small shop operating out of a building with no sign on the front.

As to your question on cost, these guys said they'd charge me $270 for the 20% tint (their most expensive) -- they of course carry all the tint options that the VW and Mercedes dealerships offer.

Do people seriously ask for $800 for a tint job?

The latter figure you mentioned is much closer to the mark. I had two cars done last year for around $250. Excellent work.

Good looking tint job, is it 20% on the driver and passenger windows as well?
I've heard that it's illegal to have anything less than 35% on the front side windows while the rear windows and rear windshied can have 20%.
Would a car look weird if it had 20% on rears while 35% on front 2 windows?

Most place in Sydney are around the $350 - $400 mark unless they are doing a special. I got mine on a special deal through a mate including stripping off the old dodgy tint for $230. Here's my tint on a Mk3 @ 20% all round.

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

Here is mine. Done in 20% Omega Plus film by Australian Auto Tint in Ringwood. It's a nice glossy dark black colour, but is quite easy to see out of, even at night.

yeah, do even tint all round.. it does look weird if you have 35% on the front and darker on the rears... what kind of cop is going to pick on a vw anyhow lol... and if they do, its only $200ish...

get defect off and then go darker lol

                        Howdi Guys,

                        Great looking tints.

For those with 20% tints on front windows.... (and am not meaning to be negative - just something that I have always wondered/been cautious of.....)

can car insurance companies dispute a claim if they find out that the fronts have less that 20% tint?

also - when selling the car (i turn over my cars every 3-4 years) would having 20% on fronts affect RWC?

Have an MY08 R32 on order that arrives in December that I am looking at getting tinted.

                        Thanks for you help guys.

Just rang AAMI and posed the question "am i still covered if I get 20% tint, or any tint outside the legal limit"?

The rep asked her supervisor and the answer is...

"Inform us when you get your windows tinted so we can add it to your policy". (they dont' need to know what % -- just that it is tinted)

"We will still cover you in the event of an accident if your tint is outside the legal limit, however, AAMI will only pay to replace the window tint up to the legal limit".

Wish I could get that in writing, but sounds encouraging.

I've never had an issue in the past with either insurance or rwc and have always had 20% tint.

i have max legal tint on my mk3 and am looking at tint options for my mk5 now. Im not overly fussed with the legalities of it all. My biggest problem is that i find it difficult to see at night in my mk3 sometimes. Mainly only in areas that dont have proper street lighting. Would love to get a really dark tint on the candy white car though.
