But from what I've come across, it seems like general owners of the cars aren't aware it needed to be done or aren't sure of the history before they purchased it.

it's a calculated risk on your part the oil in the gearbox not only lubricates the metal parts but also the clutch's in the gearbox hence the need for a 60k service as well as the cost of the oil which is a big chunk of the service cost as is the filter

Good point ! I wouldn't be buying a car knowing that it's engine oil had been so infrequently replaced so I guess I should follow the same with the gearbox.
Just makes the search for Mk6 on the market that little bit harder... It seems like they are few and far between at the moment on ones that actually had the service done or know if it has been done

The 'wet' clutches are used in 6 speed gearboxes, and can be found in TDI models or high performance variants that produce a lot of torque (GTI).

Yes the 7 speed should have the oil changed, oil lubricates the metal gears.
Dry clutch just means the clutch packs are ins a separate chamber to the actual gears.
I would assume 60,000km on this, check your manual.
7 speed used different oil to the 6 speed. A switch to mineral oil is required as the synthetic oil was found to be conducting electric current and screwing with the mechatronics.MK4 GTI - Sold

Just serviced my DSG today.
$395 from a VAG specialist.
Genuine filter and seal. OEM fluid by Fuchs.
181k, so this is my 3rd DSG service.
Engine and transmission feel as good as new. The dsg is smooth again and shifts cleanly, no jerkiness or shunts when coasting then WOT.
Happy with car again, so I think I'll keep it for a while longer as it's worth f all.

I recently purchased a GT Sport TSi with DSG with 140k on it. From what I got of the service history it did not have a DSG service at 120k. It still drives OK and shifts OK. A little rough when coasting to a halt and in crawling traffic, but nothing I would complain about. But I've never owned a DSG before so not sure if it could be a lot better. I'm a bit reluctant to take it to the VW dealer to get a service done as I'm worried they will say it needs a new mechatronic or clutches, or that changing the fluid will make it not drive as smooth. Am I better to let sleeping dogs lie or is it likely to be fine. They quoted me $800 for the service.MY08 Golf MkV GT-Sport
