I totally agree with the quality of techs in dealerships too. The thing you need to understand is that Vw is still only quite young in Australia as it has only really boomed within the last decade or even less. I find the best guys are the imports, we have some great quality techs from the U.K in our workshop with a heap of experience. I also work with some drop kicks who I even wonder how they got their qualification(one who has been in the trade for 10yrs and still isn't confident enough to do a timing belt, thank god they fired him this week). The problem with this trade is the fact that it attracts people with half a brain cell lol. In my opinion go find a mechanic or tech who you can trust and are happy with their quality of work and stick with them.

mmmm that might go some way to explain why when I took my car to "VW dealer of the year" for service (first couple of times I've EVER gotten any of my cars serviced at a dealer and not a specialist) that the steering wheel control module was coded up wrong, twice.
First time the rear wiper didn't work and I thought I had damaged it or something but turn out it was coded for "sedan" and second time, after fixing the brake switch EPC issue, forgot to enable cruise control
I'm still OK with their service, but my missus says that's just because I've got VCDS, most people would go back and complain.
I guess people have to get trained some where, you get interns looking after patients in hospitals, that might be worse

For a good vw mechanic i use dandy volks in dandenong father/son operation no bull**** good service all our vw,s(3 of them) get serviced here always had a good result with no issues
As for your gearbox its a dq200(dry clutch) that does not need a regular service every 60,000k like the dq250 and dq381 wet clutch models (fitted in gti/r and diesel models)2017 Golf Alltrack 135tdi All options

I do the DSG service myself, have done 3 now on different cars and have clocked up about 160 000 ks on gearboxes that I've done.
It's not that tricky, It's easy as after doing a few of them. I can get oil cheap through my step dad- Anglomoil DCT, $65/5L (Anglomoil mostly supplies in bulk to trade, no retail outlets) and OEM or Mann filters for $40ish.
I use the factory method of getting the level right, drain/refill method sucks IMHO. A manual oil pump is pretty much essential otherwise filling is a PITA.

But when I asked a VW dealership they said it was "optional" to have it serviced at 60,000km. Saying some people don't want to spend the money?

That's what I thought as when I looked up service schedules for the Mk6 GTI, the 60k service had the DSG listed for oil and filter change.
Just as I look around for one on the market I'm trying to see who has done the service or know if was carried out as part of the service
