  • New GTI

Hi All. First post, so pardon my ignorance. I'm picking up my GTI on Friday (ex demo 1000 kms) and I'm busting with excitement. Is there any advice learned folks can give me regarding running-in times ( how many kms) what to look out for/avoid and how to get the best out of my new baby. Any advice would be worthwhile. Thanks!

Welcome, Burtybear ... enjoy the forum. There seem to be two schools of thought on running in your new dub:

    1. Flog the cr*p out of straight away (apparently seats the engine in well).
    2. Take it easy for the first 1500k ... and then flog the cr*p out of it.

Personally, I can't vouch for either and think it should probably be a judgement call on your part. Bearing in mind that engines are made a lot stronger and more sophisticated than they were decades ago and VW do bench testing before engine release.

Anyway ... I know that advice is probably not worth much ... but, as I always say: 'Take my advice ... I'm not using it.'

Cheers, Mate. Enjoy the forum, post pics of your car, get out and about with other dubbers and just have fun.

      Welcome to VWwA burtybear

With running in the engine I've heard to drive it like you normally would.

      Cheers

I'm curious. What is the GTI User Manual's recommendation on running-in?

              GTI user manual states:
Up to 1000 km do not drive faster than 3/4 top speed, do not use full throttle, avoid high engine speed, do not tow a trailer.
From 1000 to 1500 km, speeds can be gradually increased to maximum road speed or engine speed (rpm).
I am assuming that VW don't want us to push to 300km/h in those times!

LOL! Thanks for that. I'll have to try and curb the urge, then....

Best way to run in an engine is to keep the engine under load. Your allowed to Rev it hard up to about 3500rpm.

as you get closer to 1000km rev up to 4500rpm

Idea of running in the engine is to bed the seals etc.

Also as soon as you have done 1000km. Check your engine oil and also have an oil change done. If you need help with that let me know I can get it arranged for free...i do a lot of my own work along with other gti friends.

                  Also enjoy your car!

Hopefully see your car around glenny

                    Hi all,

pick up my GTi last month and it is now 33xxkm. Just curoius about when should the first serive take place? Cause as my dealer said the first service will take place at 15000km, but is that too much?

                    much appreciated !

I thought there was supposed to be something at 1000kms? Geez cant even remember!!! but other wise 15,000 it is, unless you feel like doing an oil swap at 7500 yourself?

Best to do an oil change at around 2000km

And use a really light engine oil to lubricate the hard to reach places. The stock engine oil is quite thick and its just to pick up from of the little debris in the engine.

But thats me being anal and being in love with my car

I thought most cars had an initial service of 1,000 - 1,500 km's??

Maybe to check everything is fine and dandy and pick up on any production issues early? Maybe for a good reason? Usually a freebie with a new car, which is why I lean more towards the checking rather than a 'good reason'.

Oil + a check over is much cheaper to do to lots of new cars than it is to replace a few major components in a few cars after they fail from something that could have been caught in a short inspection.

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

I must be really anal...I get my dealer to give the car a once over every 2500km's (just on 13000k's now). Have to admit, i think that the DSG needs it...certainly feels better after every reset.

You guys are mad. You are talking about a car that had millions of $$$ spent on its development and eventual building - why on earth you would need to the dealer to look at it every 2500 is beyond comprehension and beyond anal.

an oil change at 7500 wouldnt do the car any harm whatsoever bu after that - its every 15,000 k's.

Does anyone actually belive that Volkswagen dont know what they are doing when it comes to giving you service intervals on a car they designed? The car has a 100,000 k warranty, do you honestly believe if the car needed to be serviced more often they would tell you that seeing as they are responsible for any faults in hose first 100,000 k's.

Now get out there and enjoy your cars and forget about servicing for a while.
