GTI & Mileage

Hi all - I just want to check if this norm with GTIs. I will add that I have the GIAC chip, which from my research shouldn't add any issues with mileage.

I average around 13L per 100kms with a mixture of city and freeway driving, and i very rarely push the car. Infact some of my female friends at work mock me at the way i drive. each time I start the car in the morning and by the time I'm at the end of my street, the clock will show 35-40L per 100 km average. Does the clock reset each time the car is started?

The best I can get out of a full tank is around 400kms, which leads me to believe that this vehicle is far from economical?

yeah doesnt sound right, I got 600km per tank and I'm no grandma driver.

something is def wrong, my R averages 450-500km with a tank (OBC says 12.5L/100km)
get it scanned, you never know, it might throw a code or two. I'd take the battery off for 20-30 min, see if it makes a difference

Are you letting your car sit there and idle in the mornings to warm up? If so this really throws your avg/L out, ive had mine show 60/l once lol.

Also are your trips very short? if so then i would say 13/100 is acceptable. My commute to work is only 15minutes in traffic and I average around 11/L and get about 400-430kms per tank.

And you have 2 avg/L one that resets every time the car gets started and then not driven for a few hours. OR one that is permanent and accrues over time, you press a button on the steering wheel to toggle between the 2, one will have a little 2 on the top of it.

I average between 8L and 8.3L per 100 kms every tank. 60/40 freeway city driving and while I haven't got the foot planted too much , I usually give it a little stick here and there. I live in Perth though, so the traffic congestion would be pretty light in comparison to Melbourne or Sydney where I'm sure your economy would suffer.

I do mainly city driving and rather slow peak hour freeway journeys, and I get similar mileage to you. Best that I got was a nice freeway run with tailwind, around 8.5l/100. Nothing wrong with your car. I would expect a little less with it chipped.

I disagree. I often travel from Townsville to Cairns (350kms) and with the cruise set to 100kph (canbus speed) I will usually return between 7.0 - 7.2l/100. My car will get approximately 850kms to a tank on the highway.

Around town is obviously hard to compare due to different traffic congestion. In Townsville I will usually get around 700kms to a tank - although my daily commute is about 12kms of 60kph and 80kph zones with only a few traffic lights and very little traffic.

I suggest the OP should have his car looked at.

wow thats crazy fuel consumption.. I dont get anywhere near that. Over xmas i did the most freeway driving since i owned the car (From newcastle to sydney and back, then up to nelsons bay and back to newcastle) just got 600kms out of it. Normally around town im at 400kms as well.. Agree with the previous comment, i think the ops consumption is normal.

i dont own a GTI but just to add how much the consumption can vary depending on conditions - the most i have got is 890kms (with 20 remaining) and the least is 490 (with a few remaining).

that's a difference of 500kms. 100% city v 100% freeway.

I have a FSI Jetta which is a GTI golf with a boot and I get around 7.5L/100km sitting on 110km/hr. Around town is obviously higher and solely depends on your right foot but generally, 13L/100km out of these is too much mate. I average about 15L/100km around town in my XR8 so go and get it checked out.

An ECU tune will improve low throttle fuel economy but most likely not by the amount that you desire.

Get it scanned for codes first; most VW dealers, specialists, and tuners will be able to check it out for you.

Did a trip from Perth to Collie over the weekend with a 6x4 trailer loaded with 2 sports bikes about 100kg of gear and two people with the cruise set on a real 110 for the better part of the trip ( 117 by the stupid ADR compliant speedo ) and still managed 11.something L/100km. Did about 7.5 for a similar trip with no trailer and no gear just 2 people a few weeks before.

How are you checking your mileage? from the MFD?
The MFD is highly inaccurate. A more accurate way is to fill till the first click and then divide the no. of litres with the no. of kms done.
Then divide 100km with the result to get the no. of litres per 100km. You should do this calc for several tanks to get an average of what you are doing.

Having said this, 400kms per tank is pretty bad for a GTI. I get an average of 550kms per tank out of my stock Pirelli and that is not driving like a nanna.

Do a scan like the others said - could be a PCV or DV issue. Failure of either may not put codes up on the console and you may not realise it in day to day driving. A friend with a GIAC tuned GTI didn't realise he was driving around with a blown DV for months until he took it for servicing.

Did you mean 100% freeway (890 kms) vs 100% city(490kms)?

If yes, my wife's GT did the same amount of kms for highway (880kms) but we get about 600-650 for 100% city.
