My GTI went on a round trip from Melbourne to Orange and returned 6.8 on the MFD. From Wheelers Hill to the Westgate I have seen 5.9 on the MFD. On a cruise last year I got 6.2.

The same car in short stop start trips around Melbourne suburbia can be anywhere from 11-15.

do cars with an ecu flash run leaner?

its seems that alot of factory turbo tunes are very safe and use fuel to keep things cool i was wondering if this is the case with the GTI ?

I am getting around 500-550 on very urban cycle but have only filled it once post purchase at the start of the month

My old GIAC tuned GTI used to get around 10L/100kms around town. Much less on the highway. I was never scared to give her a squirt either.

If yes, my wife's GT did the same amount of kms for highway (880kms) but we get about 600-650 for 100% city.
yeah thats what i meant. the least number of 490 was the worst i can remember but not something i get frequently.

i usually get 600ish w 100% city driving. so same as you.

I have been getting 7s for highway and 10s for city driving. However my air con has been going well for the last couple of days and I have noticed a general lean to more like 13s for city. I tested air con a long time ago on a trip to melbourne and didn't lose much on the open road (7s for normal vs 8s for air cond)

My MKV GTI DSG has got as low as 6.2km/l going TO work jocking along at 80 to 100k with the rest of the traffic.
Comming home when the roads arn't quite as busy is a different story. Often way over 10km/l
                  Overall I average around 8km/l.
Funnily enough I don't get good economy on the highway. I think the sweet spot must be around the 80-100 mark.
Anything over 110 and the revs are too high.

I have a GTI with APR stage 1 tune, get avearge of 8.5l/100, around 50/50 freeway/traffic. Down to 7.5l/100 on all freeway.

                    32l/100 around Eastern Creek

I have been taking note of my consumption out on the highway since this started. I have been getting about 7-7.2L/100km sitting on 115km/hr. Not too bad I must say. Around town, it depends on your right foot, still around the 10 mark.

                        28.93 @ 426.5kms = 6.783118

                        13.78 @ 179.8kms = 7.664071

                        39.84 @ 570.1kms = 6.988248

                        40.57 @ 488.6kms = 8.303316

                        44.71 @ 459.5kms = 9.730141

42.71 @ 426.8Kms = 10.007029 (zero driving over 60 in this tank.. So this is what you'll get in crap Sydney traffic!!)

                        26.33 @ 294.0kms = 8.955782

                        23.76 @ 346.2kms = 6.863085

20.85 @ 321kms = 6.495327 (genuine 100% freeway. Started the tank in cooma and filled coming into Sydney so I could get a true highway figure with zero city driving)

                        44.17 *@ 450.5 = 9.804661

                        44.66 @ 476.1 = 9.380382

                        43.15 @ 466.3 = 9.253699

                        48.17 @ 512.9 = 9.391694

                        38.31 *@ 465.3 = 8.233398

                        39.11 *@ 492.1 = 7.947572

That's a list of my litres to fill v number of kms driven. It's pretty clear the tanks where I have done 100% city which are up around the high 8's to high 9ltr mark. 100% highway are under 7 and mix tanks are anywhere in between.

Over xmas i did the most freeway driving since i owned the car (From newcastle to sydney and back, then up to nelsons bay and back to newcastle) just got 600kms out of it. Normally around town im at 400kms as well.. Agree with the previous comment, i think the ops consumption is normal.
400km from our GTI engines is normal? If I got that from my car, I'd be furious! Particularly with a chip tune, you should be getting much better figures. I average 600-650km from a tank (about 50/50 freeway and city). You could imagine with my mods, I don't have a very light foot either.

How would you get better figures (lower fuel consumption) after flashing your car with a tune that delivers more power? The only ways that I can think you could achieve this is by running the GTI lean or by a team of magical pixies pushing your car.

That's what a chip tune does. Adjusts the air/fuel ratio, timing & boost. From factory, the GTI's run slightly rich for safe use. Don't get me wrong, if I put foot to the floor through all 6 gears, i'd consume more fuel than a stock car, along with consuming more tyre as well :/ but for daily driving, fuel consumption is considerably better with a chip tune.

Unless the stock tune was poorly made I can't see how tuning the car for more power would reduce fuel usage. Manufacturers spend tens of millions of dollars trying to get their cars to use less fuel so why wouldn't they just get their tunes perfected and save all of that?

More boost = more power and more power = more fuel and more air.
