Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

After asking a few questions I believe that the error can be corrected by accessing through the VCDS . A fair bit of discussion on the MyGti website bears this out. Apparently the ODO is unaffected only the displayed speed is altered.
Question is do I want to fork out $500 for Ross Tech software and hardware to allow me to do this as well as many other things. Very tempting as I hate being "shackled" to a dealer for the time that I own the vehicle.
To clarify, my speedo and MFD are pretty much the same as both read 7% high at all speeds compared to my GPS (external).

    Cheers Dave L.

Dealer workshop told me the speedo comes from a different source to the odometer which is supposed to be accurate ie you don't "clock up" extra ks and arrive at service intervals sooner or get an over reading on the Ks when you go to sell.
When I talk "speedo" I talk MFD(which reads +7%) . My needle one is worse; about 8.5% overread.
Hej guys. If we do a "Group Whine" maybe VW will come to the party and do a deal, reset our speedos (and shut us up)
Would have thought the Teutonic traditions wouldn't have allowed for anything but 100% accuracy-in anything.
This sounds more like a "c'est la vie"; "You want to live forever?" attitude of their nearby neighbours.

        Best of luck with that.

They won't even fix the EA888 acceleration rattle so they won't do anything with the speedometer.
Best bet is to find someone with a vagcom and get them to change the settings as per logger's posts in other threads.

VW oem will not help you out. Period. Get over it.

You can fix yourself. See my post on prev page.
Just the VCDS (vagcom) adj may give you 4%.

I don't think it is worth it. Your chance of being clocked speeding will increase.

If you're suggesting that Volkswagen should make all their cars unroadworthy of course they're going to refuse.

The ADR's are clear and all manufacturers have to abide by them.

Information on the change is here - Volkswagen Speedometer Error Correction
              - along with links to the ADR and the UNECE rule that it's based on. This same standard applies in most countries around the world.

Sorry Maverick no one is suggesting that, As quoted earlier "ADR error is just that the max error allowed. Speedos can be 100% accurate."
Making a speedo read 1% high will still fit within the ADRs in question. I could live with that.
Also I fail to see how an accurate speedo will lead to me getting speeding fines!!! If you know your real speed is 100 KPH and your speedo reads 110 KPH I bet everybody out there sets their cruise to 110 KPH as they know the real speed is 100KPH which means the inbuilt error is completely worthless.
I would happily sign a stat dec for VWA that I will never hold them responsible for my speeding fines, only a "freckle" would do that anyhow.

                Cheers Dave L.

Not really. When my speedo read slow (last 3 cars), I drove faster to compensate / keep up with the other traffic. Now that my speedo is within 2km, I just sit on the speed limit. A known speedo error is no different from people setting their watch 5/10/20 mins fast to arrive on time somewhere.

I fixed mine by going to 225/55x16 tyres (from 205/55x16)

The whole intentional speedo error thing really gives the the s###s! I fly a very large aircraft for a living, and accuracy is what we live by. The concept of having to do a bit of mental maths every time you want to know something simple like your speed, is so mind bogglingly stupid as to defy belief.

Slight difference between the two in how they measure their speed, large aircraft don't rely on round rubber objects that change size to provide their speed, the tolerances and maintenance in planes is completely different to mass produced cars and the training between a pilot and a driver is dramatically different. Knowing the true speed of a plane is a hell of lot more important as well especially when you can't easily judge speed like you can in a car.

Absolute bulldust, have you read ADR 18/03 or are you just relying on the misinformation that seems to be spread on the topic of speedo error?

As is clearly stated in the ADR that I posted

In the case of vehicles of categories M and N:
                        0 ≤ (V1 – V2) ≤ 0.1 V2 + 6 km/h;

This means the speedo MUST be a minimum of 6 km/h out and a maximum of 6km/h and 10%.

It's there in black and white.

Uhm yeah that's what it's all about..... And I bet most people don't set their cruise at 110. It's partially about maintaining a speedo that doesn't display a speed that is under that of the actual speed over the life of a car to take into account different sizes of tyres, wear and tear, different pressures and so on and so forth.

I would happily sign a stat dec for VWA that I will never hold them responsible for my speeding fines, only a "freckle" would do that anyhow.
What part of this being an ADR don't you understand, VWA has nothing to do with this and cannot alter your car to make it more accurate.

So, if your vehicle was made after ADR 18/03 came into force and you find a way to make your speedo accurate, your machine will then be technically unroadworthy...

(edited) One of the problems of being an old F**t like is me is that I have lived my life using common sense in decision making,
                            that no longer works.

Can we add some figures into that Mav? I don't get the equation. Lets assume that we are all happy to have our speedo 3kmh "wrong"

                              0<=(100-97)<= ((0.1*97)+6)
0<=(3)<=(15.7) So isn't it saying that 0 must be lessthan or equal to 3 & 3 must be less than or equal to 15.7? SO a 3kmh under speedo is OK? I hate equations like that, so I've probably misunderstood.

Uhm yeah that's what it's all about..... And I bet most people don't set their cruise at 110. I see what you are saying but most of my friends (who aren't car people) set their CC at 10% over because they know the NSW police have a 10% leeway.

Of interest: Corollas & Commodores mustn't meet ADRs. Both the work fleet cars (Corollas) and the wife's Calais have speedos accurate to 3kmh at 100kmh. Would this be because they aren't aligned with the EU rules?
