Which oil to top up with?

All this talk about oil usage leads me the question.. what brand & type of oil do you use between services? I am heading up the new england highway to Toowoomba this coming thursday & my oil level is still on the full mark. When should I check the level? Say at Tamworth or is that too far. Any advise would welcome. Bazz

So far at just under 700kms with my TFSI and no oil used at all. Am monitoring it though.

Just to confirm as I will be buying some top up oil to have in the car. VW in an email to you said an owner using either 0w-30 or 5w-30 (fully synthetic) will not void warranty?
Also, is there a recommended brand or any oil matching the above criteria is fine?

Dunno about the TDI units, but I noticed the oil filler cap on my TFSI is emblazoned with the Castrol logo. Guess I'll be using that brand of oil

That's very interesting to note that your Jetta is not using oil. I have now reached the 10,000 kms. mark and I checked the oil level again today and it is just under the maximum level. It is definitely using oil. I'm really just hoping that this is because the rings have not bedded in yet as brackie suggests.

From the replies it's obvious that there are different experiences among us Jetta owners. I may just have to live with top ups.

In the meantime, I'll enjoy the ride of a terrific car that really likes to be driven.

just a short question before my bigger reply.How did you break in the engine? did you give it a bit of boot through the first 1000? or did you baby the motor and not exceed 4000rpm???? be honest!!!

Yeh, just checked under the bonnet. Oil filler cap says Castrol as well, ssooo Castrol it is.

I certainly did not baby the motor. I ran the car at over 4,000 RPM whenever there was the opportunity. But because my first 1,000 was mostly driven from home and work during peak hours, the car was driven more at 4000RPM or less than over it. Whenever there was an opportunity, I would use the manual shift as it was up to me to change gears compared to the "automaitic".

Having said that though, my manner of driving was nothing different from when I broke in my 2004 Impreza RS manual and my previous other vehicles.

Oil usage

Isn't there a warning light on the dash to indicate low engine oil ? That black 'thing' fitted to the sump has something to do with it? Bazz

well then,thats good,so the rings have bedded correctly!babied cars at run in dont bed the rings correctly as we have discussed many times on this forum.maybe there is another issue if the oil consumption is a bit too much.start documenting all the oil and if need be start comlaining!!

I used Castor Edge oil 'cos it was only i could find at the time in 1L bottle
Maybe I shouldn't do this but here is responce I got. It will not void warranty as long as you do not use it for servicing of your vehicle durring warranty period, after that it is up to you.


The correct oil viscosity of the 2.0L Tdi golf is 5W30. Please note we supply this grade of oil purely for the convenience of the customer in the case that the VW oil is unable to be obtained. If you are replacing the oil then it must be replaced with the genuine oil only. If it is found that any component has failed due to the incorrect oil being used that part may not be covered under the vehicles warranty .

In response to your email enquiry, I can advise you that the correct engine oil for vehicle is Volkswagen 504.00/501.01. Any oil used in the engine therefore must meet with these specifications. Depending on the oil manufacturer as to which one of their oils meet this specification the oil may be either 0w-30 or 5w-30 and must be fully synthetic. The engine oil for use in this vehicle is the same or similar to that as used in some of our high performance petrol engines and as such Diesel engine oil may not be suitable.

Prior to purchasing my Jetta, I had been told that VWs generally do use a little oil. Having had four new Falcons in succession over 12 years, running them to between 100,000 and 120,000 KM and NEVER putting in any oil between services I am not used to topping up the oil.

With the Jetta, at approximately 5,500 KM I had to add 1 litre, car was serviced at 15,000 and I've just hit 20,000 KM and added another litre which worries me somewhat. 1 litre every 10,000 I can live with but 1 litre 5,000 KM after a service seems a little much as I don't thrash the car.

The unknown factor of course is was the car filled to the correct level after the service, guess I'll check that next time.

Just thought I'd drag this one up again, I'm wondering if anyone is experiencing similar issues to me here. Since posting this post I've added another litre and now at 27,000 KM I need another litre so it's starting to look like 1 litre every 5,000KM.

Comments anyone?

I would bring it up with VW, that doesn't sound like normal oil consumption. Find out what VWs specification is for oil usage.

That's why I suggest you try and find out what is 'normal' oil usage for the TFSI engine, rather than rely on the dealer palming you off. I dunno how, though, but it should be a specification available on it somewhere.

A friend's Sooby had a new engine fitted as Subaru deemed it was using too much oil.
