being unique and radical will always have its immediate niche, but its also a long term risk - so i do see why Mik thinks it won't stand the test of time as well as something more universally "average looking".

IMO, GTI front much better, the other "thing" is a little too average. But mk4 front with an abt or oetinger kit is even better still (although I might be just a little biased)

I'm old and grey, my legs are bent and weak...

so I've decided I can handle some bling.

So ... do we see pics of your bling? (We'd rather not see pics of your weak, bent legs, OK? )

Go the GTi front end! And the poll shows.
Unlike the MK4s where the GTi was identical apart from fogs.

I think that you are right Dave, this is a little more spohisticated.

Interestng that the GTI's big brother is less of a statement and more sophisticated 'inbetween' of mkv stock and GTI front end design.

You are all GTI fanboys, as if this poll was fair!

Mick I must admit you have a point there. All the other Mk's have the grille lines and this one doesn't, see how everything goes, maybe it will stand time?

But you can't beat the GTI grille horny

Mick - you forgot 'they're both bloody ugly' as an option In my opinion, the MkV will never be a classic in the looks department

Posting remotely today are you Mick?

The Mk5 GTI front is a classic, and in time, will be as timeless as the Mk1s and Mk2s. Actually, in some ways I hope it's not, because that will mean that the GTI hasn't lost it's way again. It's the mistakes of the Mk3 and Mk4 that make the first two generations "timeless".

The Mk5 GTI addresses every single negative point I had in regard to my old Mk4 GTI. And it cost less to buy.

Mk5 GTI ftw, in all aspects!

In terms of a "GTI look" the Mk3 and Mk4 were virtually the same as the rest of the model range. It's like they just had a few badges left over to stick on standard Golfs. As a design execution, acrosss the range, there's nothing wrong with the Mk3. The VR6 looks great I reckon, but it's not a GTI, hence irrelevant to my comments on the Mk3 GTI. As a model in isolation, the GTI lost it's way in the Mk3 and Mk4 generations. That's a pretty universally accepted position to hold.

The mk5 R32s look good but gee, I would hate to have to clean dry bugs off that chromish finish! I am not caning them but in time I think that finish will tarnish in time.
The GTi is definately going to be a classic look into the future as it is a bit "out there" unlike so many boring looking cars on the roads these days.

Yes and no. It lacked the performance that the 2 previous Golf's had.

Looks wise wheels, darker lights, arches interior, there are a few things that were the different, and different to that of the vr6. Wasn't the vr6 called a Mk3 GTI vr6

Well, Australia didn't get Mk3 GTIs, so I'll have to leave that one, but when you'd like me to start listing the improvements in the Mk5 over the Mk4 GTI just let me know.

I did 77,500 very happy kilomteres in a Mk4 GTI and only 11,000 to date in the Mk5, but the improvements in virtually all aspects are undeniable.
