Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

With the number of people on this forum with new TDIs & the service costs involved it makes sense to me to do our own services. I know many are not interested or haven't the time but for those who are, this forum can supply write ups or info needed. All of us need to pay while the cars are under warranty but after that I for one will be doing my own.
The major stumbling block for most people is the mystique surrounding these hi tech cars, that only your dealer has the highly trained mechanics who can work on your car.
I acknowledge that the info needed is a bit scarce at present but as time goes on this will change. Non genuine parts will be increasingly available & the serviceing/repair costs will be a fraction of the cost if you DIY.

I remember how 'special' I thought my mkiv was when I got it and was afraid to tough it. Once I had the engine cover off it looked alot more realistic, and car like!

      I'm all for DIY!

I have serviced my VS commodore myself since 38000km and nothing went wrong. Couple of water pumps and radiator but that is it.
All I am afraid of is if I use 5W-30 oil will it cause any damage ? Do I need special tool to take oil filter off ?
And to top it all off is that I have never worked on front wheel drive engine.
You'll probably need triple joint japanese mechanic to get to few parts
I will, one day when i gather my courage, take front cover off and look at the engine to familiarise myself with it

the approx price of servicing the jetta tdi is at 12 month/15000 km is $180.00, the 2 yr/30000km service is approx $450 , 3year /45000 km service is approx $180.00 and the 4 yr/60000 km service is approx $550.00"

Half the price of the 60000km service in Coffs! MUCH BETTER!!
My quotes are almost the same for my Golf 1.9 manual.

            ACDCFAN,

I recently did an Engine Oil & Filter change on my VW Caddy 1.9L TDI with DSG.
I have posted a procedure on my Website & Forum.
I am not sure what the 2.0L TDI looks like but it might be close.

                thank you Dutch Aussie
Why is it that you have to fill up oil filter housing with oil before starting up?
As attachment said how do you fix it if you overfill it?
You may not know all answers but some kind of info as to why would be appreciated

If you do not fill it it takes some time to fill when starting up. Your engine is then running without the proper lubrication for seconds.
If you fill it with the filter installed it shouldn't overfill.

I hope this answers your question.

                      Checks and tightening

I took my TDI to Andrew (gtimk5) for her 15,000km service. He did the oil change service and gave her a thorough going over. He even picked up a slight front wheel aligment problem and, typical of him, rotated the wheels so that I wouldn't further scrub out the tyre before I could get an alignment done. As for tightening, he checked and if necessary tightened all of the suspension nuts and bolts and any other bits and pieces hanging off the underbody, including the exhaust hangers.

I don't know if this sort of diligence is shown by all VW service centres, but I can thoroughly recommend Andrew. He and John Hall (who did a 7,500km oil change service for me) are the only people other than myself who have laid a spanner on any one of my cars and I wasn't disappointed
