Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled
After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.
Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before.
We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I don't know the GTI turbo exactly, but that looks like it could be the actual turbo body housing and the inlet compressor "faceplate"?Last edited by Greg Roles; 25-03-2010, 07:02 PM.2014 Skoda Yeti TDI Outdoor 4x4 | Audi Q3 CFGC repower | Darkside tune and Race Cams | Darkside dump pDPF | Wagner Comp IC | Snow Water Meth | Bilstein B6 H&R springs | Rays Homura 2x7 18 x 8" 255 Potenza Sports | Golf R subframe | Superpro sways and bushings | 034 engine mounts | MK6 GTI brakes |

That is actually a noise suppressor or "muffler" found mainly in the K03 variants.
Oettinger (and some other manufacturers) have a higher flowing replacement.
From what I understand, it does not make any direct HP, but does in crease torque through the rev range!
There are some pics in our 2006 K04 swap in this gallery:
