I must say the sound has disappeared but once in a while it comes back again.... Tracking the car will definitely fix it HEHEHHE
My local VW service dealer suggested, when and if the noise comes back to straight away contact them, take them for a drive so they can hear (witness) the problem then they will get on VW Australia’s back in relation to warranty repair...
Sounds like its a common problem amongst the GTI's.... RECALL!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thats what I get! It comes and goes. To me, the sound resembles that of something the is a tinnnnnnnny bit loose but still structurally secure. I strongly believe that mine is dsg/engine mount related..... I might add that I have not heard it for a couple of days (touch wood...tons of wood) maybe I nailed the perfect amount of G's around a corner to help secure it LOL
Mine comes and goes aswell but atm it is realy bad and sorta getting realy worried bout it so booked it in to get looked at by VW for friday and will let you know what they find. From the sound and how bad and loud it is getting and how the car is feeling i am thinking it is the engine mount that is loose or stuffed. Not to sure but if it is the enginemout i wonder if they will replace it under warrenty or not but if not i am getting the VF mounts as they will last longer and be a lil better under hard driving lol
YAY I got my R!!!! White, recaro seats, 19" wheels, bluetooth, reverse camera

Best of luck with your dealer visit, keep us posted!

Been back 2 times now and both times they say that they cant hear anything . I have been asking around and it seams like everyone says it is the engine mout and have even said that to them but they wont do anything till they can hear the noise. I can sorta understand their side but dam its not a good sound and mine got realy bad at one stage.
I am seriously just going to take it to my mechanic and ask him to check it for me cos its a prick to get to or i would do it myself

Are you in the car with them whilst they are listening for the sound? I am going to make sure that I am with them as mine is getting worse! I have checked many forums (world wide) and many people get this issue, very few have been told that the problem has been found.
I am booked in for next week and if they act like they cant hear it heads will fcuking roll!!
ok went back today and they still say cant hear it and everytime i go in they say hang on and we will go for a drive and you can come but then i see my car drive off so no havnt been with them i realy want to be the one to drive it and show them cos they are not sure what the prob is and i am bit over it. let me know how you go and i will just keep going to mine and i am going to get the ****s next time if they dont let me drive the car to show them

Just keep a firm grip on your car keys the whole time bro, when they ask to test drive it say "Lets go"
I am going to ask them to sign a letter stating that I made them aware of the issue also, just incase something expensive happens down the track which they then choose not to cover. Dont like my chances in them signing though LOL

Just an update on the MYSTERY sound!!
Went to Preston VW (recommended dealership) the guys were great and came for a test drive so that I could show them the sound. The sound did show its ugly head, thank God, and the boys then set out to try and find the problem.
Pretty hard to find such a problem, if it is one, and after all the searching we still have no explanation. I have also spoke to Dean at Volkspower and he suggested that the torque arm mount may be the cause as it has been replaced from OEM to APR. Still only a guess but it could simply be that the increased stiffness of the bushing is moving slightly and rather than giving a little, as soft rubber would, it is binding up slightly then giving the "click" sound once it slightly moves. Lubricating it may help.
I have noticed that a few of the boys with this same MYSTERY problem also have the mount insert.... BOP BOP BOPPPPPPPPPP *dramatic music* which mayyyy be the cause... will see Dean soon and have a suss.
the bush its self wouldnt make a click noise you would think due to the material it is made out of. It should just fill the void in the rubber and not contact with anything that could actually make a click.
Did you check the bolt securing the torque arm is nice and tight? If re-used these bolts seem to have a habbit of backing themselves out again. Only takes a few seconds to check so long as you have a jack and a 21 or 22mm socket. Cant remember the size off the top of my head.
Also check the bush on the middle bolt. (there are three securing points in total. 1 on the subframe and 2 on the gearbox) These are prone to failure on cars that are driven very hard. If this is the case its best to upgrade to an aftermarket solution such as the BSH or VF engineering which replace the whole mount.
If all the above seem fine there have been quite a few reports of subframe bolts being the cause of clicking on US cars. Not had any personal experience with that one though.
The sub frame area would make a lot more sense to me but you would think that Volkswagen would have checked there first?! I may chuck her up on the ramps just to check for myself as I have not bothered to do so yet.
I have been told not to worry about the sound but I just can't relax whilst I hear it... seems to happen more when the chassis is under high amounts of lateral load
I may just upgrade a few bits and pieces in the end and I would like a strut brace as well to help the GTI's plasticine chassis!
I've got the exact same problem. The noise only comes on medium-hard acceleration in 1st and 2nd gear.. and only when the car is cold - after the car is fully warmed up (about 10-15 mins of driving), the noise completely disappears.
I noticed this noise appear only after I installed the ECS mount insert, but like the idiot I am, I reused the same factory bolt. I had troubles getting either bolt in (both the original, and the newly supplied one) and probably ruined the screw thread in the frame in the process. But after one last attempt, the original bolt went in so I didnt want to remove it incase I couldnt get it back on. I think I'm going to take it to the dealer to have all subframe bolts changed.

Damn! Checked everything you mentioned bro and all good. It MUST be something to do with the torque arm insert as the sound was not there prior to this mod. It would make sense to me if it was the TAI washer moving slightly when under longitudinal and lateral load but the bolt is done up tight as fcuk!
Would also make sense that the original bushing (soft runner) soaked up the force which would then save the washer and bolt from receiving the force, now that the TAI bushing is harder compound than the standard one, the force is transferred to the bolt and washer causing the slight movement resulting in the click sound.
I am 99% certain that this is the problem, fark I'm a genius!

LOL you might be onto something there. The stretch bolts that are originally used, should not be used again once they have been loosened.. they will never tighten to the same spec as a brand new bolt. Some people have been known to reuse the same bolts without issues, but traditionally thats what stretch bolts are notorious for.
The only issue I cannot fathom, is why the noise disappears after the car is warmed up.. I was started to think it might be something to do with the exhaust mounts.. but I never went near them!
