  • Does your cruise control brake?

    Hi all,

I notice that when I set it up to cruise and it goes downhill, the speed just picks up. My limited experience with CC in other cars (japanese mostly) is, it brakes to maintain the speed at the limit which you've set.

For example, I set it to cruise at 80 and as it approaches a hill, it accelerates to maintain 80, but after the crest, it just picks up and can even go up to 90 before I hit my brakes to bring it back to 80 (which of course turns CC off).

Is the VW cruise control set up differently, or just me?

Mine brakes in the Polo to maintain down hill speed...I just thought this was the rule...

A bit OT, but one thing I notices in my last car (04 Barina SRI) was that if the car started to aquaplane with the CC on, it would switch it off automatically, but on the Polo, it doesn't do it...Scary the first time it happened!!

          Very good topic.

I just purchased a new Jetta 118TSI with 7Speed DSG. When I use CC, on the downhills it gathers more speed than set in the CC. Hence I have to use brakes everytime. I thought this was normal but if it is not I guess have to ask VW?

Let's see what other forums experts have to say before I call the dealer.

          Cheers

I don't think any basic model VWs have the braking cruise control.
It's know as Adaptive Cruise control by other makes, and is relatively new feature.
I'd disagree with the Polo and Mk3 owners above, and say that they do not have this feature.
If you had this feature it would be advertised widely and you'd probably have to specify it on your order as an extra.

I disagree with your disagreeing... CC also applied my brakes in my SRI as well.

I am quite willing to take you for a drive to show you on my way though Brissy when I head back to Townsville.

I agree with JustCruisn, the Polo and certainly the MK3 and Astra don't have that feature (often called hill descent control or similar). You don't notice the problem as much in a manual whereas with an Auto or a DSG gearbox in Drive it will sit in the top gear and roll away. Dropping the Auto or DSG into Sport or Manual mode allows you to control the speed going down a hill without affecting the cruise control.

The only current VWs that automatically brake whilst in Cruise control are those fitted with adaptive cruise ie the option available on Passats (and possibly the new Golfs? Not sure). Automatic "Speed" control is far more advanced than standard cruise control, and in many years and many cars I have never had one yet that brakes. It is fairly common for auto-gearbox equipped cars with CC to change down, which can give an impression of braking, but have some-one follow you and you will see that the brakes are not being applied. My 2009 R36 does not brake under CC. It will change down however in an attempt to maintain speed. The manual outlines this quite clearly.

My friend's Polo GTI does not brake on CC. If they did VW'd be singing about it because it would be a brilliant point of competitive advantage...

Ryan... your Polo must be "special"... and no, I have no desire nor need to come for a drive. Photocopy the page in your manual about cruise control, and post it up.

Hahahahaha...My car is like its owner...Very speshal!! (As I don my helmet and catch the somewhat shorter bus...)

In all seriousness, I'm not leading you on. Coming down Lapston Hill out of the Blue Mountains, with the CC set on 70, you can physically feel the car slowing itself down as it heads down the grade, and on every hill I have been down with the CC set, I have never needed to use the brake to pull the car up...This dosn't come down to compression braking either.

I would post up the manual page, but I have no access to a copier or scanner at the moment.

What Japanese cars have descent control? The feature is only quite new and is only generally on high end vehicles.

This is normal for nearly every single car on the road, very few cars have any kind of descent control. Some will drop a gear or two when going downhill but so will the DSG if in sport mode.

Why don't you drop down a gear or two rather than touch the brakes?

Also check in your manual as it will tell you this is normal operation and I think it even mentions to drop down the gears to maintain speed.

My Polo doesn't brake on CC. It will definitely maintain the speed (by cutting the throttle) if you are in a low enough gear though.

And braking CC is not the same as ACC as ACC will brake to a halt if a car slows down in front of you, whilst braking CC will not brake below your set speed. But I don't think any VW has a 'braking CC' as such.

I'm pretty sure it's standard with Adaptive Cruise Control as Audi offers it with that package and it's the same option number on the VW's.

It works at speeds down to 40kph.
