glad i came across this thread as i had the same issue comming back from Eildon (vic) the other w/e. Mine was set at 100 on GPS and it went as high as 109 on my GPS. Bit of a shame really as im not willing to risk my license for convenience.

Didnt think of changing down a gear on DSG - will try it out next time thanks

I own a 2008 MK5 Golf TDI manual. It doesn't brake automatically while cruise control is engaged although it has decent (not descent) engine braking anyway being an oiler.
I aggree with Maverick as well. You will find the info you need in your glovebox manual. Mine is in booklet 3.1 pg145. It clearly states that when travelling downhill the ccs cannot maintain a constant speed. The vehicle accelerates under it's own weight. Select a lower gear in cars with an automatic gearbox/dsg, use tiptronic to change down (engine braking) and/or use the foot brake to slow down the vehicle.

I dont think any VW has Downhill Brake Assist (DBA) AKA Downhill Brake Control (DBC). The closest technology is called Adaptive Cruise Control which uses radar technology to slow your car down if there is a car within 150 metres infront of you doing less than your set cruise control speed.. and only the Passat and Touareg use this technology. But again, this wont help you going downhill.

Yeah, I know what you mean...I had mine set to 113km/h all along the F3 to Newcastle, and it didnt speed up coming down into Mooney Mooney either...You could feel the car pulling itself up coming down into it...

This is a most interesting thread. I had the same question. We drove our 2.0L '08 TDI DSG Golf to Sydney and back over Xmas. Great drive, and the teenager didnt complain about the rear pew.

At the Mooney Mooney bridge, which for those that dont know it, it a big, long dipper of a descent to a still quite high bridge and a rise on the other side, so the drop is about the same going either way. On both occassions, CC was set at 108ks and was heading North of the 120 (cough) mark, before braking had to be applied, thus cutting out CC. (Cant recall who was driving, officer...). Same on a big descent around Tamworth.

I thought it interesting as around town, without CC, the car can feel, in auto mode, to be slowing down by dropping gears to maintain speed.

Anyway, we had a chat to the Brisvegas Springwood dealer a few days later when the driver seat lumbar support had to be replaced (at 13,000k). They said it was completely normal operation. So I came on in here to find this thread. Really helpful, thanks guys. Pity the dealer didnt go the step further and suggest the fix, select manual mode.

The dealer probably assumes that you had read the manual or would read the manual where it tells you the options to control the speed on downhill roads when using cruise control

I have a bit of a history of failing to learn from any number of manufacturers' ever so helpful books on everything from VCR's (remember them?) to microwaves, watches, electric toothbrushes and computers. Sigh; unless specifically directed to a page by learned VW dealerships, our encyclopedic tome with VW embossed on the front is no chance, not after I got lost in the safety index last year.

I thought this was normal operation for any CC.

I've driven a few cars with CC - Fords, Holdens, just basic models and never had one brake on the downhill run while on CC.

I'd be happy if I could change gear but using the clutch turns the CC off, just as the brake will.

As difficult as it might be for you GTI drivers, I guess we'll all just have to put our foot on that brake pedal!

I am pretty sure that my car firmware was updated last service perhaps for different modules as I didn't have some features until 75K km service. I wonder if anyone knows here about f/w releases for MKV TDI 2.0 ( in my case).

There is no "descent control" device in VW Golf V. One may feel the car slows down which is caused by rolling resistance as no further acceleration from CC when speed past the set limit. some are on 6th gear will run faster on down hill, others already on 4th will feel car holding steady, all depending the moment of the gear position shifted by the CC.

"descent control" system is fitted in all new Mercedes, and believe also fitted to Honda Integra, which required 4 leveling sensors fitted on each corner of the car, when computer system senses losing of balance, it will apply engine-break by shifting down one or more gear depending the angle of the hill.

The adaptive CC system is another topic apart from the original poster.

As I said it's pretty simple and it's most likely your country has been changed which affects a whole heap of settings. All of them can be reset by asking your dealer. No conspiracy, no upgraded modules but a glitch or slip of hand has reset some values.

Friend of mine bought Nissan X-Trail in 2006 or 07 and it has CC that hold speed at any descent. Perhaps there are different systems around...
