Mav, yep you're right - just clarifying that even if our standard Cruise Control 'braked', it would not brake below the set speed whilst Adaptive Cruise Control will brake for cars ahead as well as for downhill braking.

Mav, re japanese cars..camry's (even the older ones), honda civic's and some mitsubishi's.

OT, to be more specific about my original post, I was not referring to adaptive cruise control. I think the better term from the responses so far is 'descent control' whether that's achieved by braking or more likely by dropping a gear.

I shall try changing to sports mode or manual while on cruise later, to see if this is the 'solution'.

neither my jetta TSI or Polo GTI brake whilst going down a hill with the cruise control on.
All they do is reduce the throttle % to try and maintain the set speed but if the hill is steep enough they will go faster than the set speed.

None of those with the exception of the Pajero have anything like descent control. Most likely you're seeing their gearing doing the work, how many rpm's at 100? I think they're reasonably high at 100 @ ~2500-3000 so taking your foot off the accelerator will see the car's speed drop.

The reference to ACC was purely in relation to the claims of descent control being fitted to other cars.

If you look at the RPM's at 100 in 6th gear it's probably going to be down around 1700 and you have a much lower rolling resistance than the older cars so when you take your foot off the accelerator it doesn't really start slowing down that much. Do the same in 4th gear when it's at higher RPM's and it'll slow a lot faster and do it in 3rd and it'll be like braking.

I notice that when I set it up to cruise and it goes downhill, the speed just picks up. My limited experience with CC in other cars (japanese mostly) is, it brakes to maintain the speed at the limit which you've set.

For example, I set it to cruise at 80 and as it approaches a hill, it accelerates to maintain 80, but after the crest, it just picks up and can even go up to 90 before I hit my brakes to bring it back to 80 (which of course turns CC off).

Is the VW cruise control set up differently, or just me?
This is interesting issue. I had this problem from day one till 75K km service last November. Now my CC has braking ability and I tested this many times for the last holiday break. I believe the b*stards updated f/w as I noticed:
            1. CC got braking ability
            2. I can't open fuel tank little door if driver door is open and engine is Off!
            3. Time On for internal lights has shortened
            4. It seems if head light switch is in Off position automatic headlights go Off much faster than if the switch was in Auto position - needs to be verified
            5. I can't move any windows up/down if driver door is opened and engine is off, it needs ignition key to be On position - just before engine start - not happy with this feature.

Ha I was wondering about this just yesterday, driving home from Sydney on the F3, speeding up whilst going down a hill and having to brake.

They would have had to replace a number of major systems to give you that feature so I really really doubt that you have braking ability.

These are all programmable, sounds like your country setting changed as this can affect all of these.

Both my previous MkV Comfortline and current 2007 Elegance Octavia do not activate the brakes when CC is engaged.

There is a particularly steep hill on the way to Cooma that is quite long that the cops like to hang out at to catch people speeding - like shooting fish in a barrel

Even if I set the CC at 95km/h, I still end up going over 110km/h before I have to apply the brakes halfway down the hill. Engine (compression) braking does bugger all - even in 5th gear (manual).

Both cars reacted the same way, which is not surprising considering they are almost identical cars mechanically speaking.

Nop, it has breaking ability now 100%, they only replaced small cooling fan at $600 but it was side issue. I was specifically testing it in 90 zone on F3 towards Sydney and at 100km/h to Central Coast and then at 110 all the way where I could.

How do you know it has braking ability as opposed to the car is dropping down a gear or two? Rest assured that if it were possible to enable braking to keep the cars speed under control that Volkswagen would have it standard on the Mark VI's and every other car they sell and that people would be enabling it on the Mark V's.

Actually I wanted to start this topic on f/w update last November, as I didn't ask for any changes at all, went for 75K km service with the only issue of fan malfunction. I just wanted to test CC on long freeway drives and still wasn't sure what changes for headlights they made as I found this topic. So I guess it would be good to know if anyone got f/w updated recently.

Look, it was going 90 downhill towards Mooney Mooney bridge. So if you know the road you would appreciate it! The speed was measured by GPS as well as speedo - max was 92-93km/h by GPS. However the most important was that I could feel the car slowing down...

I'm not doubting that you felt the car slowing down but there is no way the dealer retrofitted hardware from another model of car at the same time he fitted a $600 fan.

What is required hardware? Of course they didn't add anything, but why my car got this feature now? Why did someone change settings that I didn't ask to change? Do you know release dates of any f/w updates for this model?

Yeah, I know what you mean...I had mine set to 113km/h all along the F3 to Newcastle, and it didnt speed up coming down into Mooney Mooney either...You could feel the car pulling itself up coming down into it...

The offer is still open to rides by the way.
