Late last year I was looking to replace my Fiat, and had looked at Honda Euro's, Subaru Liberty GT's and the odd SS and XR6 Turbo.

When I went for a quick look at Nepean Motor Group, I couldn't have been assisted better. I asked for a drive of a heap of VW's, GTI Polo, Golf and a TDI Jetta. It was no problem for them to arrange and let me loose by myself.

They asked if I was interested in a Skoda, which I remembered seeing at the Sydney Motor Show the year before. They asked if i wanted to have a vRS overnight to see what I thought. I didn't expect this, but took them up. Needless to say the next day I laid my cash on the table after getting the exact changeover figure I wanted for my trade.

There was no bullsh*t games played like "oh i'll have to ask my manager" and coming two minutes later with some crappy counter-offer. The sales manager there who I dealt with was pleasant and easy to deal with, and didn't f*ck me around and waste my time. (something I cant say for the Honda and Subaru dealers I visited).

I think all in all the "deal" took around 20 minutes or so and I picked my car up the next week. I'm pretty damn happy with how everything went when dealing with Nepean Motor Group.

      AVOID CCC!
Call Denlo at Parramatta for slightly better service or Barloworld Five Dock.
All the other ealerships in Sydney Metro are crap (with the exception of Bill Buckle VW and Neapean Motor group in Penrith and the two above).

I do car dealership mystery shopping lol i get paid to assess their dealership services etc.

I did both dealers as they were both part of the Inchcape group. Obviously this is a personal experience, and different days are different. Mind you I had the same scenario set out for consistency, both i had to make an appointment prior to going.

My experience at CCC was exceptional, walked in receptionist welcomed me, offered beverages and asked questions, let me browse while she contacted the salesperson. I have to remind you that at Inchcape group, their dealers allow their customers to test the car "drive it your way" hence you can test it however you like by yourself for however long you want. Apart from that, the service was exceptional at CCC, the salesperson knew what he was talking about.

My experience at Denlo Parra, was completely opposite, walked in, salesman sitting on their desks chatting, walked around for 5-10 minutes without being approached by anyone, the salesman didn't know what he was talking about (apparently he worked in the industry for 20 years lol), test drive was minimal, he sat their and guide me up the street left left left back to the dealer (approx 2 minutes), while there are no other customers around.

The abuse came after I gave denlo parra a poor report, the manager broke the confidentiality agreement and called me, called me a liar and providing false information, said that the salesman on my report was his best (which I laughed), basically saying i have no idea what i'm doing, considering i have done many dealers before.

Interesting. While the reception at CCC was good for me too, the negotiations with the CCC sales people were a nightmare.

The 1st time, was quoted $48K for a MkV GTI - walked out. Denlo sold us a Pirelli with Sat Nav for $49K.

2nd time (6 mths later)- CCC strung us along wasting a whole day and raised the price on the used car we were looking at because they knew we wanted it - dishonest f**kers - they excuse they gave was that it was priced incorrectly.

No use having good front desk people when the sales people are a***holes.

well yeah, i guess it is a totally different experience, it depends on the mood of the salesman, their budget etc.

They are the same company, so they should be able to sell the exact same car for the exact same price!!! unless rent is more expensive at chatswood lol

Salesman tend to think they are too smart, they pick the customers they can rip off, i guess it is part of their job which is to make as much money as possible for the company, they aren't there to be your friend.

What i hate are salesman who goes this is the final price, no negotiation whatsoever to try and bluff you.

I guess just different day different people. While i was at Denlo, the salesman tried really hard to get me to buy a car i don't want to buy... (was pretending to look at a r32.. but he was pushing me towards a gti) don't know why..

anyways i think i'm blacklisted from denlo, i have noticed dealers remember who mystery shopped them, i walked into a mazda dealer a few weeks back with my gf (she was looking for a car), which i have done a report on like 2 years back, and the whole dealer remembered me, they remembered i did a report on them!! lol while i was looking i keep seeing people staring at me, after sometime, a guy came up to me and said are you mystery shopping us at the moment? which came to my total surprise, as i have done so many of them, it didn't even cross my mind!

If they recognised you as a mystery shopper, wouldn't they be bending over backwards to give you good service and prices then?

We like the Audi Q5. It offers a couple of nice engines, and the 7 speed DSG. Price adds up to a pretty penny if you start ticking options. I'm tossing up whether I want to lease one or just buy it. As its so far into the the LC tax regime it seems to ruin the dynamics of leasing.

How would a dealer know you are a mystery shopper. The whole point of the exercise is that the dealer thinks he is dealing with a "real" customer.

I would also think that you would be bound by some type of confidentiality agreement not to discuss your findings others than with those who are paying for your purchases.

Who actually pays the mystery shopper? Are you contracted directly to the dealership/parent company?

Would also seem strange to me that if you have been identified by dealer staff that the same organisation would contact you to mystery shop the same place again.

Happy to be corrected and always willing to learn.
You know you are getting old when you cancel your order for a 3.6 CC and buy an Icelandic Gray TDI CC instead.

I got the best service and price at essendon volkswagen but then again most the time i dont like dealing with just plain salespeople i like to deal directly with the sales manager or dealer principal.
I called over the phone and haggled several dealers till i got the price i was happy to pay
i even got offered overnight test drives with Vw Jaguar Audi and Bmw
My advice is to look confident and be direct to the point

They don't know that i'm a mystery shopper while i'm there of course, or else like you said it would be pointless.

After each mystery shopping assessment, there would be a report, of the time and date. As each assessment is in alot of details by the shopper, we actually go through the whole process, test driving, negotiating, general service of the place, each assessment usually take at least 45 minutes to 1 hour, usually longer, as that is how long it takes a buyer to buy a car.

Therefore, on the report there is usually a time and date. Eg. Tuesday between 2-4pm... it's not hard for the manager to find out who I'm, as most assessments require us (the mystery shopper) to make an appointment, therefore we would be on their books already.

Mystery shopping is not a "job", just a hobby really when i have time, as i do like testing new cars as well.

And no i'm not contracted directed by the company or dealer. The process is more like the head office of say Volkswagen, contract mystery shopping assessments to a mystery shopping company and they contract the assessment to a mystery shopper.

I've never mystery shopped the same dealer, there are so many dealers out there (especially sydney) i don't have to/want to.

well it also depends on alot of stuff really... it depends on the size of the dealer, the price of the car etc.

I have found making an appointment always seem better, they are expecting you, you don't have to wait around (generally). If you are enquiring for a 100k car, more than likely a sales manager would serve you anyway.

One time i went to BMW in Sydney, (i'm 24 btw) walked around didn't get served at all. A few weeks later, i called during the week to make an appointment to see the 135i and said that i would be trading in an audi s4. and wow the tone and service changed so much when i walked in. lol

It is not exactly like what you are saying with keeping chin up/be confident and you will get respect. most people look at appearances first (if you are walking in), i'm 24 so on weekends i still dress quite casual, thongs etc. I don't see why i need to dress that well to buy a car. ALL salesman judge by appearances that is a guarantee, which is stupid to be honest, considering people nowadays from mid 20s onwards can easily earn over 100-150k, plus people in the late 20s and early 30s can dress very casual (shorts and thongs) on weekends, and salesman would dismiss them straightaway.

IMO, making an appointment with a stealer is like making an appointment with the angel of death. i.e. setting yourself up to be slaughtered.

You might as well cover yourself with blood and jump into a pool of Great white sharks.

If they don't see it fit to treat you well w/o an appointment then they are not worth buying from.
