  • Exhaust on GTI

    Hi Guys,
Im wanting to do something with teh exhaust system on my MKV GTI.
A mechanic has told me that by installing a full system from cat back it will improve fuel economy greatly, is this true? He says once you take off the factory exhasut it will make massive gains on economy but only around 10kws on power.
Also am looking at getting a remus muffler and just bolting it on. Has anyone done this and also will it give me any gains. I dont want a loud car but want a bit of a note and some power would be nice. Its already chipped so am looking at other little avenues ie exhaust air filter etc.
2.5 inch exhaust system or 3" system???
    All help greatly appreciated.

You should see some gains in economy and power.
I'm in the process of quoting up my exhaust now and I think I might be going for a full custom cat back system. This will range from 1200 to 1600 for 3" stainless steel with hi-flow mufflers. I was looking at the Milltek system, but there's no way I'm spending over 3000 just for the exhaust. You will also notice a nicer note from a full system rather than the rear muffler only.
Regarding air filter, I might be going with the BMC Carbon, getting quotes for it atm.
BTW what chip are you using and are you happy with it?

Im betting the only increases you will get is a bigger hole in your wallet and an increase in noise.

Seeing as the biggest restriction appears to be the dump pipe I don't see how what he says is true.

As for massive gains on economy and 10kws from a cat back I call BS.

Chipping is the best bang for buck, everything else is minor gains for big outlays.

The most important thing to do is make sure the software you have is suited to the hardware you buy.

Some software is better suited to a 2.5” or 2.75” system. Others are able to better utilise a 3” system.

You will see an increase in fuel use going to stage 2 (I am assuming you will get your software updated when the hardware goes in) – for me it was around .5l/100km

BTW – Cat Back is not a “Full System”. You won’t see much gain from what you are proposing. A less restrictive down pipe is where the gains are.

not all software brands needs specific hardware to match. some are adaptive.

and 3" is too big for GTIs

Actually all of the software brands are adaptive – but some hardware does work better with certain software and visa versa. The OP hasn’t told us what he has – probably a good thing given how these things turn out once certain people start mentioning brands.

Some software works very well with a 3” TBE.

                      Word.

                      Order of Mods:
                      Chip (search ~900-~1800) For 35-40kw
Intake $350-700, not so mucha power increase but noticable improvement in top end breathing and throttle reaction
Downpipe (Turbo -> Cat 'zrost) ~1000-2000. ~10-15kw providing you have a chip

You can leave the cat back, but if you change it the only thing you will notice is noise/drone.

IF you serious look at some of the big american places that sell pre-fab downpipes as they can be had for about $1000AUD delivered currently, and will bolt straight in.
