RCD510 compatibility question

I also hope you have success in the relay solution. Do you know what would happen if you had a VW/Parrot Bluetooth kit installed. IE would you have to repair the phone each time you started the car. It sounds like the relay may also be cutting the power to the bluetooth kit as well.
Interested in your thoughts!

i wouldn't think so.
as it (the relay) is doing exactly what the can gateway does (or should do) only sooner.

as the gateway is supposed to shut down power after 30 minutes, but this does not happen if the RCD510 is installed,
the relay just makes the power go away the instant the key is removed.

i won't be able to answer any of the bluetooth questions with 100% certainty though, as i don't have a phone kit installed.

i have been talking with another mkv owner in the UK with the same issue.
i got the relay idea from him actually. he has been pulling the radio fuse over night, to solve the problem.

i asked him if he had to re enter any of the pre-sets like radio stations and tone and bass levels.
he said no. he also didn't mention anything about the security code either.

The presets are stored in NVM.

The security code is stored in the BCM so you can disconnect the headunit as much as you like.

my guess is that the radio has two power lines (same as most all modern head units) one is connected to constant power for memory purposes.
the second is connected to an ignition switched feed (the fused line).

by disconnecting the fused line, the radio will turn off, just like the ignition has been turned off.

Nope, the headunit has one which is 12V constant, there is no switched power available behind the headunit. The switching on and off of the headunit is controlled over CANBUS.

I doubt it, with the skoda module I can disconnect the battery and my phone is still paired. Not really a fan of the relay switching idea myself however.

Why I asked the question is because when my battery had gone flat and had to be changed while I had the 510 in the car I had to re-pair the phone.
The bluetooth kit is one of those VW/Parrot units with the twin button answer/hangup on steering wheel.
Also when I in the end had to but the RCD 300 back in I also had to re-pair the phone.

The parrot musn't keep the settings. This can be fixed when you add the relay of placing it after the car kit so this stays connected and the headunit get's disconnected.

So the RCD510 keeps all the settings stored in non volatile flash memory ?

if i want to remain with OEM equipment, there is no other solution that will work.

no one, not even VWA are helpful on the subject.
they can not even tell me if i buy the latest can gateway, if it will work or not.

the relay is (imho) the most simple cost effective solution for this install.
dont know about you, but i can not afford to spend $370 on a new gateway, just to find out that it does not solve the problem

so for me, the solution is the simple one, thats cheap and guaranteed to work.

Speaking from experiance, (Having installed one of these units and seeing how well they appear to work and then having to remove the unit because of battery drain)I hope you get a possitive outcome. But these cars are so expensive with the electronics. I would try and see if the person you are dealing with in the UK can get a soulution from Volkswagen UK. To be the first is brave to cause damage is ?

Which to be honest is fair enough, it's not something that they would have done yet and they're not going to go out of their way to support solutions like this.

I'd ring a few dealers and see if you can get the price down, you should be able to get another 10-20% off that price. It would be worthwhile trying because you can sell the old gateway or the new one (depending on how much the dealer charges to remove and install) but as you said it's a bit of money to fork out.

so for me, the solution is the simple one, thats cheap and guaranteed to work.

Hopefully it will work well, when you do install try and avoid cutting wires where you can. There are also two 12V connections to the head unit, both permanent 12V. See the skoda bluetooth install for the parts needed for install without cutting.

The install is going ahead this Saturday afternoon.
I'm having a qualified auto electrician do the wiring for the relay.

There should be zero chance of doing any damage, as essentially
All the relay will do, is make the radio behave like there is a blown fuse
At the main fuse box.

The way he is intending to set it up, the relay will be closed,
(and then invisable) before power is applied to the radio.

So fingers crossed it all goes well.
