  • RCD510 compatibility question

    Hi all.

i have an 05 TDI comfortline, that has the stock RCD300 single disc, non mp3 head unit in it.

can anyone tell me if the RCD510 head unit can be fitted in place of the RCD300 ?

and if so, anyone know where i can get one cheap(ish) ?
anyone upgraded to the RNS510 or the avc9000 and looking to sell their old RCD510 unit ?

    Jason.

Are you after the RCD500 as currently fitted to the MKV GTI and R32 and with MY3 player function since the MY08?

Or the RCD510 that will be fitted as standard to the MKVI GTI and as fitted to a number of MY09 models now?

if i can get one, the RCD510.
it's a much better looking unit....

if not, ill just go with one of the AVC units.

thanks for the info on fitment.
there are currently two of them on ebay.
both at reasonable money (at the moment) ill keep watching and see what happens. will i have to alter the ecu via vag-com to tell it there's a different stereo, or not ?

        Jason.

I am watching them too. I would still much prefer an RCD510 over an AVC. I just think they are too likely to play up. The glare on those are terrible. I was reading through pages and pages of threads and no-one managed to find a solution. The interface isn't as pretty as the genuine one.

I wonder what they would cost to buy (not off eBay)?

i am considering asking the local VW dealer, but i suspect it's way over the top.
likely to be in the $1500+ range i guess......

i would pay up to $800 for an RCD510 though.....

From the dealer or private sellers?

Dealer price on the RCD500 was around $1700 so this should give you an idea of the RCD510 which will be around the same, maybe a little more as it's new.

Privately the RCD500's with MP3 were selling for around $400-700 for a near new unit, I'd expect the RCD510's to go for slightly higher money initially due to higher demand so around $700-900.

that was my guess on price.

there are two currently on ebay , both at about the $700 mark (not inc shipping)

i am really starting to second guess my decision about the AVC units.
i think now i will stick with the oem, and get an RCD510 (when i can)

does anyone know if European units will work here in oz ?
for AM and FM reception ? i know the rest will work, but not sure about the radio.

im an old fart that mostly uses the radio on my daily work trip.
cd's and mp3's for longer trips.....

                Jason.

Yeah, I'd be prepared to pay ~ $1,100 installed.

I will still need to buy the Compatible MDI Adapter. I am not too sure which one it is and the Bluetooth Premium Car Kit which I got quoted $1,500 from Harding Perfomance.

~ $3,000 for my desired setup.

My thoughts are, the difference between RNS510 and RCD510 is the GPS which I already have covered, because I have a Garmin Nuvi 760, which I can use on the rare occasion I need to go to some random place. The 30GB HDD would not be used at all as I have a 120GB iPod. The SD Card reader, can be used instead of the HDD anyway.

i would like the MDI too, but i figure with 6 cd's full of MP3's and the SD card, it's really just not needed (for me).
there is some info out there that state that the RCD510 can read a 32GB SDHC card too.

if that's true, i wont even need the cd's for mp3's, and like yourself, i already have a stand alone GPS.

Wow 32GB. Yeah that would be cool. I just like the fact with iPods you can have a playlist and let it play through.

Can you add the MDI later? Because, that may not be needed immediately. However, the stock head-unit that comes with the GTI's are crap!

don't see why you couldn't add the MDI later. it is just a plug in after all.....

are we talking about the same unit ?
above are some clips of the RCD510 that i want.....
it's a huge improvement on the old RCD500.

The RCD 510 can take SDHC cards up to 32GB.

The RNS 510 is limited to SD cards, the official specs are 2GB but there are some 4GB cards (SD not SDHC) that will work.

thanks for the confirmation on the RCD510.

looks like ill be looking for one of those instead of the AVC units.
i just prefer the OEM stuff.

Here's some info on the difference between the RCD 210, RCD 310, RNS 510, RCD 510 and RNS 510. I'll add more information when I get a chance.

And information on the new VW retrofit MDI kit (along with general details and details on the original MDI). There will be more information going up next week about this.
