Hey everyone just thought i would do a bit of a writeup on my install of aftermarket HIDs to try and get some brownie points. Mods please move if this is in the wrong section.
Sorry I didn't get photos of the process, but it really wasn't a hard task. The first headlight took me about 25 mins to do, then once i had it figured it out, the second one took about 5 minutes.
Have had them installed for 4 days now, and haven't been flashed once, so I'm guessing they arent too bright/glarey for oncoming traffic.
I went for a german-designed-yet-chinese-made kit off ebay, because after seeing what is inside a ballast, I'm convinced that there is little difference between a $50 kit and a $1500 factory option. I chose H7 bulbs (mains) with a 10,000K colour. I know that may seem to be too blue for some, but my Father's Volvo V70 T6 has 8000k xenons, and they are too white for my liking.
The 10,000K bulbs give off a brilliant white with a sky blue tinge. I also ordered an adapter kit for a Mk5 for around $40
Install:
1. I started by removing the plastic waterproofing that unscrews from the back of the headlight housing. I then drilled a 24mm hole through it to allow the wiring to pass through. The wires have a waterproof grommet surrounding them so hopefully waterlogging/fogging wont be an issue.
2. I then removed the factory bulbs as well as their housing. Then I installed the bulbs into the adapter rings, and screwed them into the factory slots.
3. Next I had to cut off the male spade connectors that came attached to the HID kit, and replaced them with female spade connectors, so that they were compatible with the bulb adapter kit.
4. I then passed the wiring from the bulbs, through the (unscrewed) plastic waterproofing, and hooked them up to the ballast. I tested both headlights before screwing the waterproofing plastic disc back into the housing.
5. Once I was happy that both headlights were working properly, I then installed the ballasts into the engine bay. You can see in the photos just where i put them, but i may have to change them to more air-coolable areas.
6. I doubled checked all my connections, cable tied any loose wiring, and went for a drive.

Sorry about the crummy photos, but I couldn't find the digital camera, so my phone was the next best thing. Will get better shots if requested
