  • HIDs installed on TDI

Hey everyone just thought i would do a bit of a writeup on my install of aftermarket HIDs to try and get some brownie points. Mods please move if this is in the wrong section.

Sorry I didn't get photos of the process, but it really wasn't a hard task. The first headlight took me about 25 mins to do, then once i had it figured it out, the second one took about 5 minutes.

Have had them installed for 4 days now, and haven't been flashed once, so I'm guessing they arent too bright/glarey for oncoming traffic.

I went for a german-designed-yet-chinese-made kit off ebay, because after seeing what is inside a ballast, I'm convinced that there is little difference between a $50 kit and a $1500 factory option. I chose H7 bulbs (mains) with a 10,000K colour. I know that may seem to be too blue for some, but my Father's Volvo V70 T6 has 8000k xenons, and they are too white for my liking.
The 10,000K bulbs give off a brilliant white with a sky blue tinge. I also ordered an adapter kit for a Mk5 for around $40

    Install:

    1. I started by removing the plastic waterproofing that unscrews from the back of the headlight housing. I then drilled a 24mm hole through it to allow the wiring to pass through. The wires have a waterproof grommet surrounding them so hopefully waterlogging/fogging wont be an issue.

    2. I then removed the factory bulbs as well as their housing. Then I installed the bulbs into the adapter rings, and screwed them into the factory slots.

    3. Next I had to cut off the male spade connectors that came attached to the HID kit, and replaced them with female spade connectors, so that they were compatible with the bulb adapter kit.

    4. I then passed the wiring from the bulbs, through the (unscrewed) plastic waterproofing, and hooked them up to the ballast. I tested both headlights before screwing the waterproofing plastic disc back into the housing.

    5. Once I was happy that both headlights were working properly, I then installed the ballasts into the engine bay. You can see in the photos just where i put them, but i may have to change them to more air-coolable areas.

    6. I doubled checked all my connections, cable tied any loose wiring, and went for a drive.

Sorry about the crummy photos, but I couldn't find the digital camera, so my phone was the next best thing. Will get better shots if requested

What kit did you buy and did you have to install any extra bits to get rid of the bulb out light in the dash?

thanks for finding it on ebay for me haha. I ended up paying $150 for it.

this is the kit i bought: http://cgi.ebay.com/HID-KIT-XENON-CO...3A1%7C294%3A50

The bulb-out light on the dash comes on if i turn the lights all the way to the 'off' position, but goes out once i turn them back on after a few seconds. Hopefully getting Vag Com soon to fix this issue

No, just illegal and therefore voiding your insurance.

Did your $50 kit include auto leveling and headlight washers too.

Not with HID's though - you have to have both and there are extensive threads on this topic.

I think what is trying to be said is that the use of these headlights to comply with ADR's requires more than the bulbs and ballasts being added.

That being said, changing wheels more then 2 inches over size, lowering cars more than 15mm, and a wide range of other things will defect you.

I spose as long as someone has raised it with you, and you have made an informed decision, there is no need for anyone else to comment on the legality in this thread please.

I have read all the threads i can find on vwwatercooled, vwvortex, and the golfmk5 forums, with arguments both for and against HIDs in standard headlights (ie non-projectors), and made the informed decision to go down the HID route. I am aware that in some headlights the HIDs can be too bright for passing traffic, but after seeing 'photographic evidence' (for lack of a less-serious term), i am confident that the Mk5 headlights are suitable for an HID application.

Why would the bulb out light come on when you turn your headlights off? Wierd.

So if you left it on auto you get no errors?

Correct. Leaving it on the Auto position eliminates the bulb out warning light. But I have heard it is bad to crank the engine with the ballasts on, so I try and remember to turn them off before engine start.

It's projectors or nothing. Have you driven past your own car with them on?

At least 10000k won't blind anyone, it'll just look like the Aurora Borealis coming towards them!

Have you measured the light output? Might be worth trying, as mrx said you're most likely putting a lot less light out, it might look "brighter" but it's not.

Jaycar have a lux meter for ~$40. Money well spent and you can compare the reading at different distances to compare both beam spread and output.
