Look I don't need your smart comment, as stated the dipstick was checked maybe a month ago (or earlier) and the oil was at optimum level. Within a month for it to consume so much oil is beyond me..
I appreciate the comments from everyone in trying to shed some of their light on the situation. As stated, I have the car booked in for a look over on the 16th of April, so once I get some answers I'll be sure to post.
Sorry, mate, not intending to be 'smart', and apologies if it appeared otherwise... quite the opposite, actually, just quoting the VW service guy, who seemed unfazed by the wide variation in oil consumption and seemed to place a lot of faith in the oil level warning light (though, given his position, I didn't expect him to 'slag off' the inbuilt warning systems). I would also be perplexed about the oil consumption...

At Ford, the engine building line staff measured the bore diameter, and then chose appropriately sized rings (labelled 1 through 6) to match the slight variances in manufacture. Bad matching of the oil ring could lead to higher oil consumption.
Additionally, when fitting the oil and compression rings, care had to be taken to ensure the gaps in the rings didn't line up...otherwise you'd get excessive oil consumption.
