    Sorry, mate, not intending to be 'smart', and apologies if it appeared otherwise... quite the opposite, actually, just quoting the VW service guy, who seemed unfazed by the wide variation in oil consumption and seemed to place a lot of faith in the oil level warning light (though, given his position, I didn't expect him to 'slag off' the inbuilt warning systems). I would also be perplexed about the oil consumption...

      At Ford, the engine building line staff measured the bore diameter, and then chose appropriately sized rings (labelled 1 through 6) to match the slight variances in manufacture. Bad matching of the oil ring could lead to higher oil consumption.
      Additionally, when fitting the oil and compression rings, care had to be taken to ensure the gaps in the rings didn't line up...otherwise you'd get excessive oil consumption.
      Perhaps your car was built after the Currywurst was served on a Friday?
