  • Going back to the Stealers today!

Ok so last night on the way home, my Oil light came on, I got home and pulled the dipstick to find the level was below MIN.......

I had my last oil change at 22,000kms and it now has 27,000kms. To lose that much oil in 5,000kms is ridiculous.. This has previously happened while the car only had 7,000kms.

Another one of my issues is the continuous knocking from the steering column / suspension WHO KNOWS! when turning left at low speeds.

AND finally, the engine start up noise... Is it me or do the GTI's really sound like the engine is about to drop on the floor when cranking it over??????

    Absolutely frustrated............

It shouldn't use that much oil in 5000km but the start up is normal they all sound like tractors when u are cranking it over
Good bye GTI Hello Golf R

to use 1L within 5000kms is within tollerance. VWs do use oil. Although some more than others. I know its disconcerting if yours is one that uses oil. But they wont do anything about it unless youre using a lot more oil than that.

hrmmm well for the level to be less than the MIN line with the oil light coming on, wouldn't that be more concerning especially happening within 5,000kms??

VW say that it is acceptable for one of their engines to use up to 1 litre every 1,000Km, which I think is outrageous ! Some engines do seem to use a fair bit of oil, particularly when they are new, but yours should have settled down by now, with 27,000 km on it. Did you check the oil level after you got it serviced ?

I'm concerned that it sounds like you haven't checked your engine oil level in 5,000 km.

Might be worth having a look at the other fluid levels and your tyre pressures at regular intervals. This is very similar to a couple of other threads on this forum. If you read your manual it will tell you what sort of regular checks it is your responsibility to carry out as an owner.

I agree about the 1 litre every 1,000KM being outrageous.

Mine would consistently use 1 litre every 5,000KM but now at 55,000 KM it is using a little less. Coming from a series of 4 new Falcons into which I never put any oil between services this was a bit of a surprise to me but really, 1 litre in 5,000KM is not the end of the world and the Falcon engine is worlds apart from the VW engine.

I would be asking similar questions, was the oil level rechecked after the oil change as it should be? Why was the oil level not checked more regularly especially given the experience at 7,000KM? Just how low was the oil level?

            Cheers

            George

Just out of curiosity, did you follow a "hard" run in style, or just drive the thing? Does "seem" to be usual for GTI's to go through some oil from what I read anyway. Your situation does seem to be excessive, and I'd be concerned as well.

Golf's have huge direct injection pressures, hence the rattle at startup. To be honest, you kinda get to like it, which is handy given the noise of their hypo diesel. You guys have no idea what a rattle is!

Back on topic and I wouldnt be so upset first thing in the morning at using just over a litre of oil in 5000 kms. I start every day with a possitive attitude and let everyone bring me down as the day progresses!
Lots of vehicles do use oil, its their nature, better than using coolant!!!
I think I add maybe 1/2 litre of oil between services but it all depends on the treatment I have given it. Just driving back and forwards to work and it doesnt need any.
I most certainly check my oil and coolant every now and then and cant understand customers that come in here with next to no oil in their cars at service time.
                      Cheers!! Andrew

If all GTI's used as much oil as the one in this post seems to be, I think we'd hear more complaints about it then we do. I agree with Cogdoc (Greg) sounds like the running in process didn't work out too well, might pay to try an oil additive worn engine treatment (there are some products on the market that actually help) and see if it helps to reduce the oil usage over the next 5,000k's or so. It can't do any harm and shouldn't cost any more than an approved VW engine oil top up would.

Thanks for all of your replies guys, just got back from the dealer (denlo service) who again confirmed the usage of oil to be 1L every 1000kms thats crazy!!

however when I gave him my manual he happened to pull out the service report from my 15,000km service and spotted that Nepean motor group used TDI oil in my car!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I check my oil / other fluids once a month, and this time last month the dipstick was showing at optimal level. (I learnt my lesson from the 7,000km incident).

The car has been booked in for the 16/04/09 to get all of the stated issues checked out. Apparently they are going to do some oil consumption test, to see if the rings are gone, then a drive with me to hear the clunking when turning left, and lastly the cranking of the engine.

I hope they don't stuff me around like the "other" dealer..........

I ran it in quite hard actually... from day 1 I put the car under load, and frequently travelled through the gears.

This is what was recommended to me by the dealer and the forums..

Hope it all gets sorted mate, I know where you're coming from with being stuffed around by dealers. When my son just bought his '07 Comfortline TDI it started blowing smoke something severe after only a few minutes of operation. Like your experience we discovered a short time later (after some arguing on the phone with the selling Toyota dealership) that the brains of their service dept. had in fact used Toyota diesel engine oil with a 20W50 grading instead of the correct 5W30 VW approved oil. So hopefully by running the correct grade in your GTI it may only use an acceptable amount and not a ridiculous amount like it has been.
