Don't need to. They know what they're doing and I'm more than happy to follow what they recommend and I do happen to know enough about the subject to draw my own conclusions.

        What type of Oil

My GTI has just hit 5000km and I am considering an oil & filter change. Would this be a good time to do the first oil change? I don't like the idea of waiting until 15000km on a new engine as recommended by the manufacturer.

If so, what oil should I use, I know it must be VW certified. I've read that a lot of people are using Mobil 1 0W-40, is this the way to go?

          Does it really matter?

VW have done enough testing to know that with the right oil every 15k's, their product will see out the warranty period. Be bad business to do otherwise.

If you want to stick to VW guidelines, then you're pretty safe. If you want to double the changes, personally I think you're a little safer. If you want to change it every 500kms, I reckon you have too much money, but how would that hurt the engine in any way? Knock yourself out!

Do what you are happy with, and leave it at that hey!
