  • Pirelli got APR'd Today!

    Hi Everyone!

As some of you may recall, I bought a Golf Pirelli (Yellow, 5 door with BiXenons, Sat Nav and rear parkers) about a month ago. I decided just after ordering it in early November, that I was going to go the whole hog in upgrading it wherever possible (without ruining it).

Anyway It's just had a fair bit of work done, and I thought I'd post some preliminary pics!

(before I do, I'd like to point out this isn't an endorsement, just my experiences in doing up the 'relli)..

Anyway, here it was a few days after delivery:

I'd decided that I wanted to do as many performance mods as possible, and as little 'blinging' as possible. I wanted the car to remain a sleeper (if you can call a bright yellow car a sleeper), so I decided on the following:

    1) APR Tune
    2) Brembo Brakes
    3) Full APR Exhaust
    4) KW Coilover Springs (Stage 3)

I got the initial tune done about a month ago (car only had a few hundred ks on it) and was totally blown away. The power/torque was amazing, and the car was sophisticated enough to be drivable even when it was trying to torque steer off into the trees.

I ordered all the rest of the kit shortly afterwards and began the wait for it to arrive (Harding's can attest to what a pain in the arse I was).

Anyway, the brakes and exhaust finally came in and were installed today.... Here's some pics detailing the process!

First up, here's the box with the full exhaust. The box was a lot bigger than I'd expected, and upon opening it a monster exhaust lay inside !

From what I've seen of the images taken by the mechanics, and from looking under the bum of the car, it's a serious looking bit of kit.

But best of all, from the back end, you wouldn't have a clue the exhaust had been upgraded:

This was really important and part of the reason why I ordered it. If the exhaust had been one of those over the top monster tipped exhausts, I wouldn't have bothered.

And the noise? haha what can I say.. I was taking it real easy for the first little bit (trying to be easy on the brakes etc), but I opened it up at the back of burswood and couldn't stop laughing all the way back to work. The noise it makes is just absolutely astonishing. The upshifts with the DSG and the barking 'pops' it makes when changing gears had me in fits of laughter..

    Anyway, onto the brakes!

Here she be going up on the hoist.

And out of the box comes the new brembo bits.

Cop a look at the size of those calipers! haha....

Anyway, image of the standard brakes and the new brembos side by side for comparison:

I got the 328mm brembos, even though I'd originally had my heart set on the 355s. The reason being, the 355's wouldn't fit. After the wheel goes on, there's only a few mm clearance between the face of the caliper and the back of the wheel spoke... That's all that'll fit....

As the brakes are only being bed in, I've taken it really easy. The only comparison I can give compared to standard brakes, is that the pedal is infinately stiffer than standard. It goes down about 1/2 inch - then that's it. It's like pushing your foot down on a slab of concrete.

The next thing on the list is upgrading the suspension. Booked in for some KW coilovers hopefully very early next week... Will post more pics when its gone on!....

Kudos to the guys at Quattro Motors in Perth for an excellent job, well done - and thanks to Hardings for the pricing and putting up with the never ending barrages of questions and harrassing emails wanting to know where the kit was - time and time again.

Coming up, a few beauty pics I took after driving the car home......

how do your friends manage to drive porches? they have no engine nor wheels, made of wood and are attached to a great big house! amazing . . .

On another note, WOW! what a quality build cant wait for the v3's! will it be lowered, dumped or scraping??

I thought you'd been quiet for a while... collecting all the God-like mods.
Good to see it all going in at Quattros.

I like that it is nothing obvious, all in the details.
'all GTIs have red brakes, two exhaust pipes' ...
... along with feathered front sidewalls and a driver with a sh*t-eatin grin

I'm keen to hear the RSC when it settles in.

                  Nice car, really is.

but whats with the rear hatch? it looks like it isnt mounted properly. id get the dealer to check that out, VW's are screwed together better than that (unless made in south africa it seems...my passenger door makes popping noises when the body flexes going over a gutter).

also your headlights, have you got daytime running lights in it?

Probably one of the most tasteful GTI's I've ever seen. Awesome stuff!

How are you rating the brembo's?

Well I don't want the thing lowered to the point where it looks stupid. So long as I can fit a finger in between the top of the tyre and the wheel arch, then that's about right for me.

I want to keep it looking classy, and I (personally) really don't rate the look of cars that have been lowered to an inch of their lives. If I just wanted a lowering job, I could have bought cut springs instead of the KWs. Would have been about 3 grand less too!

Haha well spotted. No, I'd just given the car a quick detail (spray) before taking those photos.. Afterwards I realised I had only latched the hatch - I hadn't properly closed it.

Daytime running lights? No? Just standard bi-xenons?

The first image with the lights on, were only the sidelights.

That looks amazing - I like your "sleeper" approach.

How much were those exhausts again?

I got a package price, so it was a bit less than retail. A smidge under 3k.

But that was because I'd bought the tune, exhaust and brakes all together.
