Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

I also leave mine on all the time and engage when desired.

Check that it may be your brake light switch. The 'rents had this problem on their car and it turned out to be just that (fixed under warranty). Good luck mate

mine has been intermittently working (or not) since i bought the car.
the switch itself seems to work fine (the green symbol on the dash always turns on and off with the switch)
but sometimes the set / resume button refuses to engage the cruise system.

i don't know what im looking at (cost wise) as it's out of warranty too.....

i thought possibly a faulty brake light switch that's preventing the cruise engaging properly.
will a faulty brake light switch throw a code ?

@85turbo, yeh it's been the same for me... very temperamental, sometimes it works and sometimes it doesnt...

I've been putting it off for a while but because I'm doing more trips up the coast now, having it for freeways will be handy... dropping it off at chatswood classic cars tomorrow afternoon so hopefully will get the problem resolved :/

Oh, you don't have to wait until the problem appears again before taking it to a dealer... The actual c/c unit logs a fault code, so the dealer's will know it did fail and replace the unit (if under warranty)

As many others have said, ours failed due to the stalk & it was probably my fault in that i used to flick the switch to disengage the cruise. It was replaced under warranty & now stays in the on position & we've had no problems since. Oh and I don't flick it off anymore

I read somewhere in UK, the new stalks are made by another supplier. You can tell if you have a new stalk if there is more writing on the unit - including "cancel" and bigger headlight icons showing high beam, low beam, flash, and more Cruise Control labelling. (ie. Set, Reset, +, and -).

So if you have the old stalk, and it stuffs up even once, make sure you get it changed over - otherwise it could cost you money after your waranty expires. - Especially if you have the APR Ecu upgrade which uses the stalk to change settings.

turns out, my problem is related to a faulty brake light switch.

ill be replacing the switch this weekend.
                            total cost a whopping $22.80.

i figured out what was going on when the cruise would not engage, and i toggled the brake pedal a little, then the cruise would engage.

so ill replace the switch, and that should fix my issue.
ill report my results once it's done.

Don't know what the fuss is all about. My cruise control always works properly. It comprises of right foot and quick scan of speedo every 10 seconds or so!

Learnt something about my cruise just the other day (which works fine, btw). I finally realised that the on/off switch also doubles as a cancel switch (pressing slightly away from on). That'll teach me for not R'ingTFM. Prior to that I was touching the brake pedal or turning it off completely.

p.s. found this out when I was having a look at my dad's Octavia RS, which actually shows the word "cancel" near the switch. Certainly no "cancel" written on the MKV's combination switch.
