  • GT Sport TSI 1.4 ECU Upgrades

    Hey Guys,

just thought i'd let fellow TSI'ers know that i have received emails from Superchips UK and GIAC, saying to expect ECU upgrades to be available with in the next month.

I know Guy at APR is getting closer to getting something ready so i would anticipate the next few months to yield something exciting for us TSI'ers

In the interim can anyone advise whether doing an exhaust upgrade would be worth while? Superchips actually suggested that only the muffler should be modified if anything at all (for their particular upgrade).

    Thanks,
    Fanaki

I would replace the rear muffler with a straight through one.

That way the system will be straight through all the way 2.25" press bent. Not a bad factory setup as there are not many bends and its pretty good radius on the ones that are bent.

I can't wait for someone to release a tune. My first preference would be APR via a Perth Dealer or Guy.... but if Bluefin comes out that could be mighty tempting. They seem to work really well and have a hand controller which lets me take control of which map i am using.

wouldn't the exhaust drone at cruising speeds?

what is all the hype regarding the milltek systems? do they have provisions for the factory sensors or do you just leave the sensors off?

      thanks

I removed the rear muffler completely and it was too loud.

So then I fitted a straight through rear muffler and I am very happy with the sound. The perth guys seemed to like it on the cruise. Burble without drone.

The rear muffler weighs about 12-13kg mine weighed 12.5kg and the straight through was like 6kg so your saving weight also.

The milltek is very nice but no longer made in england, China, and very expensive for almost zero gain on our 1.4's. The factory 1.4 system is FAR better than the factory GTI system as the GTI's big issues are the front section with 2 cat's etc. We have a very nice front system from factory.

          Thanks Polar.

I like the way it has turned out. looks stock from the back but you get the nicer note and a less restricted exhaust.

so you just removed the rear muffler and inserted a straight thru? what spec is the straight thru muffler and how much? i noticed you also got the dual tips put back on? were these after market or did you cut up the originals and modify them (bit of a noob question, sorry)?

I'm kinda new to doing "proper" performance upgrades and want to make sure i'm adding value to the car and not just "ricing" it like i did with previous rides.

          Thanks

The tips are from a VE commodore exhaust setup. They are the left hand side tips of a quad tip setup. They happen to fit perfectly with the lines of the golf and are highly polished, with a nice chrome lip.

The easiest would be to get a muffler shop to whack a Magnaflow straight through 2.5 inch muffler where the factory one is and then put the tips coming off that.

Was done by Domenic at PRESTIGE EXHAUSTS & MUFFLERS PERTH 92091559. Did a great job and even used a spirit level on the tips before welding them.

HEHE these are baby mods for me. My old car had the whole engine block stroked, head studs, GT3040 turbo, external gate, custom everything including fuel lines etc etc etc. Even did a full gearbox and drivetrain conversion from 99 model to 2004 6 speed setup.

You're right about it being exciting few months ahead.
When it doesn't rain, it pours!

These tunes have been a while coming, but a combination of a new ECU (MED17 is it? also on the US Spec 2.0 TSI engines) and wanting to produce a quality product means a decent amount of time on R&D is being spent.

So far (of the larger software tuners), Revo is the only one I'm aware of with an official tune out.

Will be interesting to see the baseline power graphs from each of these when they surface - that will play a part in my decision (if any...).

                My big question is this:

Is there any difference between the ECU on the GT and the ECU on the GT Sport? Anyone know?

And if there is, will that mean different versions of the flash? (it's rhetorical, I know )

Personally I'm hoping the flash will be suitable for both ECUs (if there are 2).

Anyway, I agree that it's exciting times ahead. And can I be the first to say: "ABOUT DAMN TIME!!!!!"?

                  blah blah blah...

has anyone looked at taking all the sound insulation off their blower yet???
The blower noise would be the biggest thing for me.....
But then my car sounds like a tractor....

If there's 2 different ECUs, which I reckon there will be, Custom-Code would do a flash for each one.

I keep asking them about it.

They are both using MED 17.5 as far as I know. Therefore it shouldn't really be different. GT and GT sport have only exterior differences as far as I know and an mp3 player.

Engine wise, my update to the ecu was the same as the one for a GT sport from what I can tell from talking to the VW tech.

It made be fried mind , but I seem to remember one of the available flashes being suitable only for the "1st" GTs...

I'll see if I can dig it up...

                          OK HERE IS THE STORY

1st GT's were in europe and used MED 16.5 (or 16 cant remember)
GT's that were sold later in Australia were newer and used 17.5 like the GT sports.

Thats why 2nd gen GT's can't get the update that the european cars had originally. The new GTI's and GT sports and GT's all have MED 17.5 in Australia. I am 98% sure. Only diesels have a different one which is why they could always be flashed easily.

OK, I'm not losing my marbles...

This is from GolfMkV (Nov '07):
Hey Mat - thats because you have stage 1 (same performance file as you had before) - your stage 2 program still has not been done by the USA yet  Any ideas as to when this will be done? I know some of the guys are running a beta code, is it possible to trial this? Cheers Stu

                            "Hey ben & Lucy,
There is two versions of ECU for this car - we can do the early one via direct port - the later one is ECU out at this stage - we are holding on until we can do them in the car at this stage. you can check out www.oettinger.com.au for the power figures."

So according to them, there are 2 versions.

Anyway, it'll be nice to see how any new upgrades compare to what's already on the market. In Oz, Oettinger have it all to themselves.

But there's also a German company BB
                            (http://www.bb-automobiltechnik.de).

They offer various upgrades for the TSI of up to 176kW & 360Nm, with uprated turbo, intake, intercooler, exhaust & chip.

A few of the guys on the English Mark 5 forums seem to like their 147kW/300Nm pipe & chip mod as it offers quite a bit of bang for the buck (about AU$1900).

Be nice to see some competition...
