  • Jetta Vandalised...help!

Hey guys. I own a 08 silver jetta TFSI and here's my story

So anyway, I was visiting my girlfriend and when it was time to leave, i find that my car has been vandalised. the driver side windscreen wiper has been snapped off and the passenger side seemed to cop the same treatment, although it was still intact.
the bonnet now has fairly large dents and dings. needless to say im very PISSED OFF!!!

Anyway, i just had a few questions

    1) i have full comprehensive insurance with NRMA with me as the secondary driver (mum being the first and the car registered under her name). will the insurance cover the damage?

    2) the bonnet looks like it needs replacing. I was wondering if there are any CF bonnets out there to fit the MK5 jetta

    3) would a bonnet from the MK5 golf fit the MK5 jetta?

    4) off topic, but while im asking questions, is there much difference cosmetically between the GTI golf HID headlamps and the R32 golf HID headlamps in terms of looks? (not the HID itself. im talking about the actual headlamps. only reason im asking is because I plan to get HID's and i saw a silver golf R32 and the headlamps on the R32 looked good and as you know, the front end of the R32 is a lot like the jetta's cuz it has the chrome front grille. I dont want anything too dark or "smoked" cuz i feel that would stand out way too much on a silver car, so I was just wondering if the lamps on the GTI and the 32 are same or different)

    thanks in advance guys.

Insurance will cover the damage, but you'll be up for the excess as they have no-one to blame to claim it from.

I'm sure there are bonnets in germany, but it would be a very expensive option. The golf and Jetta are the same bonnet, the Jetta is basically a golf with a boot!

      No idea with headlights.

This girlfriend have a psycho ex? Only your car damaged in the street?
You wouldn't be the first to cop this sort of a saga...

Just make sure you put down that your mum was driving it at the time...

BTW, be very careful with carbon fiber bonnet. They need to be ADR approved, which means crash tested etc. If not, and you say go round you GFs again, and the same dude decides to trash your car, it will be coming out of your pocket.

It really annoys me when someone vandalises your property....

I remember my old integra had just had a full respray and 2 weeks later some d decided to key it when I stopped at Bunnings.

Insurance will cover it. Sucks that you gotta be out of pocket though.

If the car is only registered and insured in your mothers name to keep down the cost of insurance and they figure this out then I'd expect the policy to be canceled and for you and your mother to be blacklisted and have to inform all insurance companies from now on that you have been refused insurance if you get caught.

Do the right thing as it's not worth the risk of being caught, there's a reason why insurance is more expensive for younger drivers and the insurance companies are well aware of registering and insuring cars in their parents names and do look at this when a claim is made.

In your case your mother is listed as the main driver, this means she has to drive the majority of the time and be the person responsible for the car. If she already has another car with the same insurance company they will ask questions. I've seen some cases where they rang the "nominated" drivers workplace to see what car they drive to work and then canceled the insurance.

If this isn't the case then ignore and put the claim in. If you do put the claim in then good luck.

My 21 year old son is the major driver of a car that is registered in my name. We had a chat to the insurance people, and basically got him a decent rating to start with. He'd survived his Ps without any black marks (which gets you acknowledgment from the authorities in Victoria), and had been driving the same car the whole time (though it was leased and insured with a different company at the time). By accepting a $2k excess, his insurance cost ended up less than mine. Upshot is that he's now accruing his own insurance history, and mine is safely disassociated from the car.

If you're nominated drive on a insurance policy, insurance will cover the damage but you will not get you access back. Reason for this is that insurance company has no way of recovering the money so you lose you access.
I don't see why wouldn't they cover it when you're nominated driver.

I'd say he's good for the claim. If he wrote it off at 9am on a tuesday going to work. Then they might have chance of refuting the claim. As a second driver I think using the car on a Saturday is reasonable.

If you are nominated on the insurance policy you can drive the car whenever/wherever you like. If you are nominated your rating will continue to get better as well. I don't know why people are making this harder than it seems?

Claim the repairs if they are more than the excess, don't claim them if they are less. Again, if you are nominated on the policy tell them you were driving it, you may have to cough up for the age excess as well if there is one.

                      Don't lie to insurance companies!!!

Being nominated as a driver is different to being listed as the primary driver.

Insurance companies work our premiums based on risk, risk is based on claims.

A 21 year old driver may be 4 times more likely to have a crash or an accident and cost them 2.9 times what a older driver with a driving history would. So they charge a higher premium to cover their higher risk.

If you as a 21 year old don't want to pay this and decide to register the car in your parents name and be listed a driver of the car with your parent(s) as the owner(s) and primary driver(s) you are exposing the insurance company to the same amount of risk as you were before but paying a much lower premium.

This falls under fraud in the insurance companies eyes and the laws eyes and costs insurance companies (and the people that do the right thing through higher premiums) extra money.

Your rating will get better if you have a insurance policy in your name as well (just like it will if you are listed on your parents policy to a certain extent - depends on insurance company)

                          • Misleading disclosure of information on the application, such as stating parents are regular drivers, rather than son or daughter.
                          • withholding information on your driving history

The insurer is unlikely to check the accuracy of the information you provide with your car insurance application, but relies on the application in deciding whether or not to give you insurance. The car insurance application will normally only be checked when you make a claim. If the statements are incorrect (even if this was unintentional), the insurer may be entitled to reject your claim.

                          Insuring young people
The cost of car insurance for young people is very expensive, which means that parents often insure a son or daughter's car in their own name. If the insurer asks you, you must nominate your son or daughter as a 'regular driver' so that the insurer can properly assess the risk associated with the policy. You should always err on the side of caution when saying who will drive the car on a regular basis, by giving the names of all possible drivers.

                          And a perfect example

Hey Guys, Need a bit of a hand here... Here's my tale of woe. Approximately 6 weeks ago, my 1993 Lancer CC GSR was stolen from North Ryde at my work. My car has been stolen once before... now, yes it was alarmed, it had an immoboliser, it had a club lock - I have no idea how they took it. Anyways, the insurance

Approximately 6 weeks ago, my 1993 Lancer CC GSR was stolen from North Ryde at my work. My car has been stolen once before... now, yes it was alarmed, it had an immoboliser, it had a club lock - I have no idea how they took it.

Anyways, the insurance company started a hefty investigation. They came and spoke to me for about an hour, interviewed my parents (as the car is under their name), examined all my phone records, examined my driving record, had my debts, my liabilities - absolutely everything was scrutinized.

Subsequent to the investigation they agreed that they would pay the claim. However, because I am the main driver and I didn't detail this on the policy (as my policy contains provision for an age excess for any driver!), they are now saying that they would recalucate the annual policy relative to my driving record/age as of 2 years ago (when the policy was originally taken out).

I received a call from Friday from the insurance company mentioning that they have recalculated the premium to a total of $10,000 for one year's insurance (as I was 19 when the policy was taken out). They mentioned coupled with the excess of $800 and a market value for the vehicle of $11k that they are quite happy to pay me $200 for the vehicle, however, I would then have to PAY THEM 1k or so to pay out the rest of the premium. They recommended it would be in my best interest to withdraw the claim completely

Claim the repairs if they are more than the excess, don't claim them if they are less. Again, if you are nominated on the policy tell them you were driving it, you may have to cough up for the age excess as well if there is one.

And what was she doing visiting her Son's girlfriends place late at night by herself? Don't you think this will be a red flag and have the insurance company start a full investigation?

Once you've been refused insurance or a claim you will always have to tell any future insurance companies this and it will cost you a heap more.

Better to tell the truth then risk this or have the insurance company take you to court.

I agree with both of you, it's absolute BS that the companies can charge an "age excess" for a not at fault accident, some insurers will some wont. This sort of thing really pisses me off and I mean really.

Even if the car is under ONLY a young drivers name they should be 100% exempt from age excess for not at fault claims like this. WHY do they list the age excess seperately if they are just going to hit you with it anyway? If "mum" had it nicked from the shops it's $500, but if sonny boy drove it there it's now $1,100?? WTF?

Insurance companies really really get my goat. It's guilty until proven innocent (or until we find someone else to blame) in all cases. I'll cop that young drivers are more likely to have accidents, but start to drop the premiums earlier, let a 21 year old who has been driving for four years incident free get the same premium as an older driver... and dont get me started on NSW green slips...

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.
