gti mk5 brakes

I have noticed an issue with my brakes sometimes when you apply the brakes it feels like the ABS is working and there a grinding feel through the brake peddle it feels like the braked pads are metal on metal. I checked the outside front ones and they are not worn down.

Any ideas on what this could be.

Are you sure its not just the surface rust rubbing off after the car has either been washed/sat in the rain/sat overnight with dew upon the first couple of brake applications?

If not, then when does it make the sound?

No, the car hasn't been in the rain for weeks and it's kept in a garage. Sorry, I forgot to mention that the traction control light is on also the ABS and tire pressure light too.

Are you sure it's not the low brake pad sensor? I'm pretty sure the sensor pad is on the inside so visually inspecting with the wheel on only let's you see the outside pad (which from experience seems to wear slower).

Its quite common for the inside pad to wear more quickly as the piston in the caliper can keep it pressed slightly onto the disk causing it to wear more quickly that the outside pad - especially so on slightly older cars where the caliper piston might be a bit stuck due to age. Brakes are very simple so if you pop a wheel or two off you should be able to easily see the issue.

I try to most work on my car. I watch some youtube videos on how to change the pads. I am sure the rotors will need to be done too. Are the GTI pads and rotor different to the FSI stock models?

I'm pretty sure they are different. Ive found brakes direct are pretty good and know their stuff as I've purchased pads and rotors for my MK5 GTI.

The GTI has bigger brakes than the lower spec models.
