I've been told that my 1.4TSI GT motor probably won't last much longer, and that I should get rid of the car asap. However I really like the car, and ideally would like to keep it. If the motor does die (as they apparently all do before 200,000), are there options for an engine swap? I know that if I keep the same size motor it won't be as much of a drama as putting in say a 2.0 GTI motor for example. So I'm asking if the 6R Polo GTI motor (CTH) would go in without too much dramas?

Is there anything wrong with it currently? Or just it's getting up in km's?
Engine swaps aren't usually cheap unless you're doing it yourself. Chances are whatever you want to put in should get a full service/overhaul too. On carsales today GT's are listed for $6 - $10k... I'd put an engine swap into that same sort of range. I would absolutely not recommend spending any time or money on another twincharged engine. While the older GT's and the Polo's don't seem to have nearly the reported issues of the 118TSI Golf, it's not something I would consider a wise investment.
One option would be to simply drive it until it dies one day then worry about it. You could get some money back parting it out (or selling it as is), but this would otherwise be a loss you're simply accepting at some point in the future.
Otherwise, consider that you could sell it today then spend $10-$15k on lots of different Golf shaped options from MKVI even into MKVII's.

Selling it might be my best, cut my losses, option.

I’d pay a workshop that knows these engines to do a compression test and a leak down test to further diagnose the issue. This will tell you more about the engine condition.
It could be carbon build up on the inlet valves causing poor idle or a pcv valve issue?
Might be worth booking it in for a proper check.MY08 Golf MkV GT-Sport
