Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • Reasonable price for replacement A/C compressor, condenser + install?

I've been quoted approximately $1900 for a replacement A/C compressor and condenser.

Does this seem reasonable or should I get some other quotes?

    Sounds on the high side.
Is that from an AC specialist or a VW dealership?

Why are you replacing it? I bought a control valve from eBay to get mine operating straight away rather than 5 minutes in, and am looking to install it this week with my A/C friend doing the gassing. I'll let you know if it helps.

My A/C works fine once it gets going, so I don't assume there's actually anything wrong with the compressor, as per many other threads on here and elsewhere. The control valve was $28.

I'm guessing if they are replacing the condenser too the compressor has had a major failure sending metal through the system.

Mine works about 5mins in, but is never that cold and then after a while it just starts blowing hot air again.

I drove my M3 over the weekend and the A/C is ice cold despite being almost 16yrs old...

I had my compressor replaced yesterday.
I tried replacing the valve first but that didn't fix it for me.
$1k installed, icy cold straight away like it used to be.

I'd get a couple of quotes anyway.
