"I played the "but I sold me car!" line" makes it sound like he's playing a line to me, dunno about you. My understanding of Aussie colloquialism is that "playing a line" means bending the truth.

No-one "plans" to crash a loan car, but good intentions don't prevent accidents. I'm sure you know this, it's why we have insurance.

I'm merely pointing out that "playing a line" to get a loaner that isn't really needed could end up being a costly mistake.

Appreciate your input, but by saying I played the "I played the I sold me car line" meant exactly that. I said I'd sold my car to place the onus on THEM to provide me with adequate service for a screwup that has left me out in the cold.

At no point did I say I was lying, nor did I attempt to obtain gain by deceiving the dealer, who has done a fantastic job keeping me informed and trying to work things out for me.

EDIT: A car that's not really needed!? That's bizarre! If I had one, I wouldn't even be worried about the problems that would incur. I now don't have a car until this one comes in, so considering my fate is entirely in their hands, anything the dealer can do means less stress for me.

Do be wary about the excess on the loaner, it's usually MUCH higher than the excess on your own policy - as part of your bargaining you could perhaps insist on no more excess than your normal insurance It's virtual money but can easily become real money....

What I'll probably do is get the lease company to agree to cover it under my existing policy with them, so I don't have to worry at all.

I wouldn't accept liability for a 'loan car' that is above your normal insurance. Whether you get that is another question.

Also if you hadn't sold your car, you would have been in the process, i.e. safety certificates and advertising, it is for all intentions good as sold. So even if you had your car, for due purposes it would be in the process of being sold, IMO it would be hard to justify a criminal offense in court.
