  • coilovers knocking problem

I recently changed my suspension setup from a shock and spring combo to some hottuning coilovers. Have had them in for about a week now and when turning right at speed I get a knocking rubbing horrible sound coming from the front left strut. At first i thought it was my tyre rubbing on the coilover or guards or something. So i raised it heaps which didn't help. But i have noticed that the strut Tops are sticking up a fair bit, and not in the middle on the drivers side strut, and a lot less but still noticeable on the drivers side. I have replaced the strut top mounts, because the old ones were totally had it. Which i thought was meant to fix this problem? I even think that the tops are sticking up more than when i had the old strut top mounts in! I am thinking the noise would be because the strut top hat thing is knocking against the inner side of the body. I didn't torque the bolts to spec as i didn't have a torque wrench. Would that of made a difference? Or have I assembled the strut wrong? I am looking at having to pull the struts back out and trying again but just thought someone here might have a simpler solution!!! Other than that in a sraight line, they ride pretty nice

My mate had Racelands coils in his Mk4 for a while. Same knocking noise on the same corner. Ended up ditching them for a set of lower springs. They rode pretty rough. Not sure he ever found the problem before he ditched them...

did you replace the bearings as well?
Everything tight, i replaced my strut tops not so long ago and it made the top hats sit way closer to the tower. 90% of my noises since coilover install have gone. Are you sure its the struts...? Checked control arm bushes and sway bar connections?

yeah I'm pretty sure its the struts, because it wasn't there before. There was noises but im pretty sure that was just the swaybar rubbing. What would be the reason for the the strut tops not sitting in the center at the top?

id go with bushes being in wrong or wrong bushes...?
My old ones sat off centre, think the new ones sit pretty straight.

yeah could be, i did them in a bit of a rush cuz it was getting dark, may have put something in wrong? I guess i will just have to rip em out and start again! arghh. I tell ya what tho, I know why my suspension was rubbish, When you push on the old shocks, they don't even come back up!!!!

Ok so I took out and checked both struts bearings top mounts and replaced. Did not make a difference! So I'm startingto think it's not the strut at all. Maybe a wheel bearing? How would I k is if it actually was a shot bearing. I checked all other connections and tightened everything, so this might be a legit reason. Although I dont really hear much of a wurring or any noise when just driving in a straight line. Only really bad when cornering. Any thought would be great.

Installed VF engine mounts and dog bone mount.

How did you tighten the top nuts? Did you use a rattle gun? If you just did them up by hand they might not be tight enough since the shock shaft spins when you try to tighten it and cause them to have some play/movement. That's what happened to mine, then I gave it a quick hit with the rattle gun and it fixed it.

Got a mate to look at it. As it was getting worse, he reckons it is the inner rack end which has gone. Cause there is movement of the wheel. Anyone replaced these? Easy job to do myself? I'm pretty handy and I'm sure it can't be any harder than putting in coilovers!

Dont use a rattle gun to tighten anything, use a torque wrench, rattles just aren't precise and can break stuff. if i remember it's 55Nm for the top mounts.
