What in gadzook's is a flexy pipe? I am still shortlisting ideas for how to plumb/funnel a bit more cold air in similar to you.

How has your fuel econ gone?

I am simply amazed at the freakishly hot sound it has helped the engine make.
Installed about March 2006, no issues at all. I go easy with the oil. Clean a few times a year more when using dirt roads. It fills up with gravel really well.

Fuel is about the same, 9.5-10 city, 8l/100km country. Cannot comment on Bora sorry.

NFI how it sounds on an NA 6cyl.

The filter sits (or hangs ) just behind the left grille which doesnt have holes in it. So there is no problems with water getting in, but it still gets cold air from behind the bumper. If i want it to get proper cold air i just take the grille out. You can actually feel the difference. I love the fact that thewre is a grille in front because after about 30,000km the filter was still clean. I replaced it anyway

I do hear you, and there is a decent logical argument that speaks to the hours and hours of R&D and testing of the "right" airbox design by a team of folks in white coats at VW. Truth (i believe anyway) is that, although there are guys in labs in white coats and stuff doing testing, there is an equal and powerful element of economic reality by bean counters with pocket protectors and propellor hats that dictate the end unit cost and profit of the cars.

Long way of saying they made a very good airbox that is proven in all weather and conditions and made of durable plastic, but is also easy to assemble at the factory and cost-effective to produce in multiple units.

Why do I mod? For the same reason a surfer puts surf stickers on his cars and stuff - because he likes to and it makes him feel good.

Honestly, I mod because i also buy into the marketing and purported research done by aftermarket folks who do their fair share of research and development and (hopefully) testing of their products. I sure as ****t know that when i fitted the VTDA to the TDI golf I had a documented increase in fuel efficiency, and having no data yet other than butt dyno and the sound i hear there is a definite bang for buck value with the VTDA on the Bora now too. It turns people's heads when i dump it in second or third now.

For me, i'd pay it all again. Its worthwhile. I haven't done baseline dyno tests so i can't prove anything of course, and you may well be right. If you are, i'd kinda not like to know.

Mate, settle, I wasn't having a dig at you, I was just making a suggestion! All I was saying is that someone either here or on Vortex had run several different setups on his R32 (which from memory was used as a race car) and his testing had shown the stock airbox was the best for airflow and volume levels WITH a larger intake pipe. Hell, I was going to put a BMC intake on my 1.6, just so it sounded better!! Unfortunately, the alure of a rear swaybar and shocks was more powerfull! I have the stock airbox and a 100mm intake pipe, it sounds better and has more induction noise, but the only thing I have found it did was seemingly makes the engine rev smoother past 2500rpm but this could just be due to the change in the acoustics of it, I can't be certain.

Just a bit of flexible air hose. It's black and sort of a fabric/plastic wrapped over a spring. Looks pretty generic.

I'll see if I can grab a photo.

              Something like this:

Considering doing this mod - have a 2yrs left on my second-hand warranty though so am not sure of the implications of modding the airbox.
