    howdy all

So, i fitted my Modshack VTDA http://www.modshack.info/VTDA.htm and am exceedingly happy with the noise over 2800rpm and the butt dyno might be picking up a torquier bottom end and throttle response too.

but it got me thinking about VR6 and 3.2L intake positions and designs and I wondered if folks could post up photos and thoughts on their intakes - particularly if you have modded the cold air feed.

As far as me and my Bora, I will post pics later tonight but my initial fitment had to necessitate the removal of the stock cold air "trumpet" that plumbs the colder air from the passenger side front air dam. Ideally i'd like to get it back to feed a bit more cold air in there but it seems to work for now.

yeah, those neuspeeds looks sweet as, but the VTDA came at a good price and does offer legitimately lower temps going down the pipes (which is the main thing i guess). plus most intakes that have proper decent intake meshing/filters sound wickedly good.

curious, on yours do you get the increased exhaust sound all the way thru, or like me at higher revs like 2800rpm?

Absolutely mate - you got a BMC CDA right? I'll be hoping to take some photos tonight, just please forgive me if it ends up being dusk/night time shots.

Worked a treat on the Golf. Got my already insanely good mileage to be that much more frugal. Ended up averaging 1200kms to a tank on highways and 950kms a tank in city with many a diesel squirt. With the Bora after 1,000kms or so (and definitely hitting the loud pedal now) i am still averaging about 600kms a tank.

coolios. VF with the cold air feed from right near the front skirt? or is it sucking in a mix of ambient air and the cold air that comes up from the front dam?

its a mix off the OEM front feed, and a cold air feed from the lower grills. same set up as when i had the modshack on mine

From memory, there was a thread (can't remember if it was here or on vortex) that the guy did a heap of testing and the best airbox design was the stock airbox that came with the car. I think he also increased in breathing the diameter of the intake tube..... I tried a search for you but it didn't come up.... Though if you're just after intake sound, the VF and BMC intakes sound good.

Have seen dyno graphs of Mk5 R32s with after-market intake setups and they have lost power at the wheels over stock though....

                    piccies!!

Photos below - apologies for the lack of artistic talent

Here you can also see the shiny allow linkages for the Dieselgeek shortshifter too

Concerned here that maybe it can't get access to enough air perhaps?

Considering shaving the end of the "trumpet" shaped cold air feed pipe from the front dam to help some air (somewhat cold) feed directly into here without the risk of water from other CAIs....

Surely we're not going to wade into this terrible part of the discussion? I do hear you, and there is a decent logical argument that speaks to the hours and hours of R&D and testing of the "right" airbox design by a team of folks in white coats at VW. Truth (i believe anyway) is that, although there are guys in labs in white coats and stuff doing testing, there is an equal and powerful element of economic reality by bean counters with pocket protectors and propellor hats that dictate the end unit cost and profit of the cars.

Long way of saying they made a very good airbox that is proven in all weather and conditions and made of durable plastic, but is also easy to assemble at the factory and cost-effective to produce in multiple units.

Why do I mod? For the same reason a surfer puts surf stickers on his cars and stuff - because he likes to and it makes him feel good.

Honestly, I mod because i also buy into the marketing and purported research done by aftermarket folks who do their fair share of research and development and (hopefully) testing of their products. I sure as ****t know that when i fitted the VTDA to the TDI golf I had a documented increase in fuel efficiency, and having no data yet other than butt dyno and the sound i hear there is a definite bang for buck value with the VTDA on the Bora now too. It turns people's heads when i dump it in second or third now.

For me, i'd pay it all again. Its worthwhile. I haven't done baseline dyno tests so i can't prove anything of course, and you may well be right. If you are, i'd kinda not like to know.

Looks very neat and toidy, where mine looks Ghetto Funkified - but one question: Where is your air filter?

Here are some pics of my BMC.
It draws air from behind the bumper. I have cut the vent in the bumper to allow better air flow.

This is a Golf but I assume its the same in a Bora.
                          Much better sound.

Not sure if mine's a kit, but on my Bora the snorkel off the airbox has been removed and a flexy pipe installed. The pipe runs down to behind the foglight blank which has had it's grills opened up.

There's a K&N panel filter in the stock box too.

Dunno if it makes any difference, it's the way the car came to me.

So how long have you had this installed for? Any issues?

How has your fuel econ gone?

I am simply amazed at the freakishly hot sound it has helped the engine make.
