  • How Much are our MK4's actually worth? Honestly.

I've got my MK4 GTI for sale at the moment. It's been up for 2 weeks on carsales and I have had only 1 call. I'm asking $16,900 but would reasonably take in the higher $15K's. Personally I think it's an awesome car for combination of safety, performance and euro in a hatchback but obviously the market doesn't think so.

We all know sadly that mods don't really add value to the car and at absolute best you may if you're very lucky get 50% back on the cost of the mods (not labour!).

I'm just seriously surprised that I have not had more calls. Maybe I am expecting too much?

What MK4 do you have and how much do you think it's worth?

To be honest, it is a tough 2nd hand car selling market. If you want to sell it quickly you will probably have to consider 13K - Jules has had his MKIV GTI on the market for 6 months nearly and no takers at 15K.

I should add, I had a 1.6 MKIV 2000 model and sold it 24 months ago for 12K.

After seeing the prices that mk4 GTIs have been going for it seems like they are worth next to nothing. over the last year or so there seems to have been a big price drop.

I wouldnt mind upgrading to something else. but i figure i may as well drive my mk4 for a few more years as i dont think they are going to drop in value too much more and its still a really good quick safe little car.

Remember these cars are 2 models old now. for lots of ppl thats way too old.

              Bought my 2000 S3 for $16500 in April. They were 30k 3 years ago when I bought a 98 A3 turbo for 16K.

They are pretty much worth 3/5th's of 5/8th's of Sweet **** all

Face it MKIV's are two generations old now and anything with high K's and more than one owner isn't going to fetch more than around 15K in a GTI and mid to low 20's in an R, any mods will in most cases only decrease the value as most people would see it as the car being driven hard rather than by a Mom to the shops on a Saturday.

If you want to get top dollar remove the mods, sell them separately and try and sell the car as a stock, safe form of transport to a parent looking to buy a first car for their kid.

hahahaha $17k, you make laugh, you really do....

To the original poster: depending on the year you'd be lucky to get $15k for a late model with options. Your's being a 2000 model you won't get $15k. I paid that much for a 2000 GTI with 30,000 less kms in mint condition 18 months ago. Your mods aren't going to add anything to the price.

Realistically I think you should be expecting $12-13k. If that.

By the way, I'd prefer to buy an unmolested one for a bit more. I'd strip all the parts off your GTI except the chip and go back to OEM before selling.

I plan to have mine written off by some careless truck etc. I'm confident it will happen sooner or later.

There is no way I could sell it for any reasonable price.

For comparison: I bought my '99 GTI with 120,000km, ECU chip, full exhaust, full leather, upgraded brakes and clutch and in very good condition all over (i small scratch on the bonnet) for $11k about 6 months ago. Also came with a second set of rims, RWC and 7 months rego.

I bought it Private Sale off Carsales.

i wud agree. I sold my 03 model 70k and with more mods than ures for 17k. I dont think ull get that much looking at its age. 12k seems to me to be a more realistic figure. Even when u compare the other listings on carsales and those in particular in ure price bracket they are the 03/04 models. Drop the price i think. 10k worth of mods on my car meant jack all which is a shame. Makes me wonder why we do it

I bought my 2001* model, one owner, 70,00kms for $17.5k in Oct last year.
It was a crap time to buy a car, and I knew it then, but my Commodore was dying and I had to get into a new car. Meh.

The MK4 isn't worth much not, and with the benefit of hindsight I should have bought a cheaper car. Maybe. I still love mine though.

*It's a 2001 model with the Grey "Recaro" cloth seats but it came with 2002 Montreal II wheels from factory. Wierd.

Why, because that's the actual state of the market?

The car market has dropped - new cars are cheaper (as dealers try to sell them), and that's negatively affected the value of second hard cars.

Mods do not add value in a resale except to someone who wants those exact mods and trusts implicitly that you haven't thrashed the car. As already indicated by several people, take the car back to stock and sell the mods separately if you want to get some return on the value of mods.

I paid $17k for my 2003 V6 4Motion Bora just over a year ago, with less than 90,000km on the clock. I reckon I'd be lucky to get $15k for it now with just over 95,000km, even though it's in great condition. It's insured for $22k agreed value with Shannons, I expect that will drop next year to reflect the nature of the second hand market (and you don't want your car drastically over-insured anyway, otherwise they won't write it off when the damage is significant compared to the real value of the car).
                            Nothing to see here...

                              selling cars

the market is hard to sell at the moment,
but remember it's nearly 10 years old , i sold my wrx00 ( classic) - 3 weeks ago it was on the market for 5 weeks, it had 102k on the dial with the mods inlcuded for $16500.00 it was clean as . The guy that ended up buying it watch the add for 5 weeks. I did advertise it for $16,800 ono

1 person phoned saw it and then bought it . be patient you will find the right buyer.

I posted it up on gumtree (free), carsales , carsguide ( free ), motor trade ( free) , I also made an add and put it up work.

Also try finding some brokers who can sell it on consignment - if it's as good as the add seeing my help selling it.

I'll throw your add out to some of the locals here.
