  • well exhaust is first step, as i want to dyno it before and after, because i've long had the feeling my cat is partially blocked, and that's sort of what made me get the exhaust... (gotta love how you justify things to yourself)
so i'm gonna take it to a place to get it dynoed, then exhaust installed, then re-dynoed ASAP
then hopefully by next week i will get the car looked at to make sure it's healthy, then will get it re-chipped (currently it is flashed back to stock... long story)
then if all is going well, will get the springs, agx shocks and front suspension refresh kit installed the following week at a suspension shop.
i think my cv's are gone so might need them looked at the same time.

so hopefully a couple of weeks!

think i'll do the front strut brace myself this w/e and chuck on the rear 10mm spacers...

    • got the exhaust put it today. sounds quite nice, bit of burple, not tooo loud, maybe a touch too much drone but ok.
got to say though, the stock cat is MUCH bigger than my aftermarket Billy Boat one...

Problem is i think the downpipe is touching the steering rack or the chasis, as i get vibrations through the steering wheel at around 1000rpm and 2000rpm... will check it out tomorrow.

Long story, but when the car was chipped with a Unitronic tune, it only gave out 88kw @ ~17psi running VERY rich at close to 10 AFR
took about 8 months to come to the decision that the problem was likely the tune and i got my money refunded and it was flashed back to stock.
Unitronic have since bailed on australia and the results from today are pretty much evidence of why they bailed...

this morning, i got my basically STOCK car put on the dyno, and it gave out a peak 88kw with max boost (so same as with the unitronic tune!!!) ~10psi dropping to 5psi at max power (bit strange though cos i've never seen it go over 8psi stock...), and running quite lean at close to 14 AFR

When they put the 2.5" turbo back exhaust on, that changed to 96kw with max boost ~10psi dropping to 5psi at max power, running better at around 12.5 AFR

Then they decided to try out a bleed valve to up the boost to see what the car would produce. (i've never heard of this technique but was interested to see what would happen). It got 109kw with max boost ~ 14 psi dropping to 9psi at max power, running fairly rich at 11AFR. Though a very smooth power curve i have to say. Unfortunatly i didn't have the time to drive it in this state, so i asked them to remove the bleed valve.

I plan to get a proper tune for it, will be going for Custom Code so hopefully if it can get 109kw untuned, i'll be able to get ~120kw with custom code...

but my mechanic said at that km its just been broken in! good old VWs!
I feel your pain, last year a trip to QLD and several melbourne trips very rapidly pushed my k's to the mid 140thousands

Did a ridiculous amount of k's last year :/ but i suppose at least they were mostly highway k's!

Will have to wait for a while if it happens - my role at work was made redundant last week, so I am currently looking for a new job, which I'll have to settle in to before I can consider something like that again. I do have the little 034 Motorsport GB going...
          Nothing to see here...

I thought that the ECU would override a bleed valve. At least thats what I was told. Your evidence contradicts that!
What other mods do you have?

            • yeah i was confused that i've never heard of it being done before. there's probably a reason.
It was Mark from MRC in castle hill who did it all. He doesn't work with many euro cars and doesn't tune them i don't think.
he thought that it might trigger the car to go in limp mode, but apparently it didn't...

R1 diverter valve, silicon TIP, N75J, and that's about it (other than the exhaust of course)

i think i can see where the exhaust might be rubbing on the chasis, it's between the cat and the turbo, it seems to go past some sheet metal over the axle, need a closer look though

              sorry to hear that manaz

              • picked up an 034 street density dogbone from DUB 20V to replace my old one (cheers), installed it and also tried to adjust some of the clamps on my exhaust, yet the downpipe still occassionally vibrates somewhere on the chasis...
i think it might be here: (though it could be to the right also, not sure. it only seems to happen in first or second, and tends to be when i turn the steering wheel, and i feel it through the steering wheel also, and can hear it...)
it's not actually touching in this photo but is close

also, tried to install some 10mm ECS spacers on the rears, but the wheel doesn't sit on them properly!!!
I've got rep r32 wheels, and they fit on hubs perfect, but not on the spacers.
very annoyed. you can see that the spacers have an addional material to the hub. god knows why. the chamfer on the wheel does not clear that larger OD section.
i think the H&R ones would have worked perfect. http://c1552172.cdn.cloudfiles.racks.../7672_x800.jpg

another shot just for the sake of it... you can probably see why i'm regretting not going to a proper exhaust shop.

                  pity about spacers...!

Not a lot of clearance there but an exhaust shop should be able to sort this out for you.

Thanks for telling us your mods, I'm hoping for similar results for mine.

Is it the fact that the downpipe came from the US, might still be a problem with the 2.5" DPs like with the 3" version... My 2.5" APR turbo-back fits fine, the DP was bought here by previous owner and I bougth the cat-back from ECS.

                      • Why are you regretting getting the billy boat exhaust? How much did it set you back? I was checking this exhaust out as a "maybe"

                        • Gave the bora a good thrash today with the ESP off at a small motorkhana style track today.
Felt good but the bora isnt really in its element, rear diff overheated I think as it was a bit whiney but sounds fine now its cooled down

The shield comes out easily so you can reshape it or just bang the crap out of it to make more clearance.
