Trent, the 5 brake light mod is way to bright dude.. if you get a ticket like that other dude did on the tex up there don't ask yourself why! Its like sitting being 50 led lights on a truck at a Red Light!
I don't find it that bright. Looking at it tonight it's only marginally brighter than the brakes. Same bulb as the brake lights.
Cheers,
Trent
Wired the passenger side brake light holder to the empty rear fog light holder and put a bulb in the empty holder.
Wired the drivers side brake light holder to the rear fog light holder (with diode) and replaced existing bulb with new one. Wired diode in between fog light switch and holder as well.
Now fog lights come on when I brake. AKA the 5 brake light mod.
don't mean to be rude, but you a$$. the rear fog light is very bright on the golf, infact i use it in retaliation when someone behind me has their lights poorly leveled/installed. the rear fog light isn't particularly bad when someone is driving behind you, more distracting (which is reason enough for people to get the ****s with you), but the worst is when someone will be behind you at the lights at night time, and you're there sitting with your foot on the brake. It shines directuly at the eyes of the driver behind you and is a pain in the arse. so what if it's the same wattage globe, it's directed straight back through as a white light, not the like the diffused RED Brake lights, which are plently bright enough.
only way it might look good is if you were to wire up two fog lights so it was symmetric, but then you would piss people off twice as much!
oh yeah and the exel is a good ambasador for the crappiness of what an asymmetric light cluster looks like
sure it's a cool trick the way you did it, so props to that, but don't drive in front of me while its still like that, you don't want me mad
Yeah i've read it somewhere that bora's came with a working foglight wiring loop on both sides, so its just the matter of sticking another bulb in and you have two fogs working, however golfs didn't. weird huh?
Trent, not a fan of a 5 brake light mod however if you use lower voltage bulbs, it should be alright.
In regards to the comments about the five brake mod. It is symmetric. Both rear fog lights are working so it's all nice and symmetrical (hence why it's called the 5 brake light mod and not the 4 brake light mod).
A few things to note. The rear fogs are red. The tail lights on the R32 are different to those of other MkIV Golfs. Ours are a darker "tinted" colour. I don't know about other MkIVs but if I put the rear fog on normally and then put my foot on the brakes and then turn off the rear fog there's basically no difference.
For your own eyes, have a look at the photo below of a Bora with it done.
Single is much better because dual rear fogs do mimic brake lights in intensity. In low visibility situations due to the intensity of the two rear fogs matching the brake lights, when the brake lights do light up the person behind you isn't going to react as quickly to the brake lights.
I'll take some photos this evening anyway.
Cheers,
Trent

yeah that's a good point, im now thinking about doing it
So anyway after some careful study this afternoon and this evening, I can say that the the rear fogs and the normal brake light are exactly the same.
For those that are still unsure go out and put your brakes on and go and stare at them and then try with your fog light if you have one.
If you're silly enough to be staring directly at someones brake lights it's not going to matter if there's 1, 3, 5 or 100 lights, they're going to dazzle you.
Lights off.
Brake and fog light on.
Brake, fog light and parking light on.
Night time no lights.
Night time parking lights.
Night time brake and fog lights.
Night time brake and fog lights from angle to differentiate from brake and fog light.
I'm sure there will be those who are still unconvinced but I think the photos speak for themselves.

I think its a good idea, you know who are going to be the people that complain the most? the commodore/falcon drivers that think its cool to have there parkers and front fogs on all the time haha

I don't actually have a problem with that as long as the fogs are angled down like they should be.
Parking lights and headlights during the day is also fine by me. Being seen by other motorists is a good thing. Even if the majority of people seem to drive with their eyes close anyway.

Trent
