After weeks of clunking from the front, it will be nice to go over a speed bump without the front end sounding like its falling apart.

CL455 - I'm about to do exactly that. Steering wheel itself is straight forward swap over, but getting the buttons to work is a whole other issue. There is plenty of info on VW Vortex and the TDI forum as well. I am yet to work out if it is worth the pain to get the MFSW to work, or remove the electronics and blank it off. Me being me, I'll get it all to work - it can be , and others have done it, but i think there is more to it than simply adding the control unit

Stan: I was afraid that might be the case.
I went through a bit of a headache retro fitting a r32 wheel with paddles to my MKV non-paddle TDi a few yrs back. Looks like I'm just a sucker for the impossible lol.. Put up some info when you do it, I'm looking at doing the swap over to my Bora when i get some time

Immobiliser (Immo)
There are two versions on the MK4 paltform these being Immo 2 and Immo 3, earlier models came as Immobiliser 2 and in early 2001 VW introduced Immobiliser 3 with the vehicle immobiliser being integrated into the cluster.
You can tell which version you have from the part number of your cluster by the last numerical digit, 5 being immo 2 and 6 being immo 3.
EG: 1J0 920 926 C - immo 3 cluster / 1J0 920 925 C - immo 2 cluster (anything except a 6 is immo 2 )
Also as a general rule, on immo2 cars the immobiliser symbol is in the rev counter and on immo3 cars it is in the speedo.
Edit: ### ### ##6 #: The ninth digit, in CAN-bus clusters, generally indicates a major revision. For the most part, it’s an indicator of immobilizer generation. In north america, there are only four possibilites: 0, 5, 6, and 7. A zero or a 5 indicates an IMMO-II cluster. A 6 or 7 indicates an IMMO-III cluster.
