What have you done to your mk4 (golf/bora) today?

The ECU controls the output of the turbo with the actuator, via the N75. The duty cycle varies to allow boost pressure through, this opens the wastegate and remove the drive to the turbo, allowing exhaust gases to flow around the turbo.

The duty cycle is written in the map so it's important that the person writing the map knows the actuator pressure. This is the max boost you can get if the N75 stops working. If the map is written expecting 7psi and the actuator allows 10PSI, then you will get overboost everywhere.

If the actuator is 5PSI, it'll not make max boost.

Thanks Gavin,
I believe that my GIAC chip has been hard soldered into the ECU. Must have been before flash chiping was available.
So saying that, I always thought that it was an off-the-shelf chip that raised power from 110kw to 150kw.

I have no idea at what boost it is set at and even if I did, from what your saying, it may not give me any benefit adding a N75J.
I probably won't change a thing as it works just fine and as the saying goes, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

If I did need a re-map what does a custom code cost and could it be used in conjuntion with my chip or is it a complete re-map?

My RX7 is so much easier to work on and boost, as I've tuned the values to 20psi and if I only use 15psi, I simply turn down the turbosmart bleed valve.

I have never tried to flash an ECU that has had a chip soldered in it. I wouldn't try TBH, the chances of failure would be high. I'd get another ECU off ebay, the same part number and flash that. You could sell you GIAC one then if you wanted and get some money back.

Most likely an 06A 906 018CH but you need to check that to be sure, fitting the wrong one would cause issues.

Cheers for the info Gavin I was hoping someone would give a real explanation, I replaced the N75 to the J version when the stock one was failing based on advise I was given at the time, so it was never used to trick the system to get more boost .

In terms of the Phase 2 tune you offer what mods are required or is it tailored to the car based on a list of mods? I've tried looking at the site but it is being updated.

The website has been offline since the start of the year. If you look at jbsautodesigns.co.uk there's a good amount of info on there.

Basically, the Phase 2 is written to take account of larger downpipe, this is the major player in the requirement league. Anything else you do would be icing on the cake. Custom-Code are not actively writing new software for ME3.8, They have done tons over the years so files are written on experience and checked with logging.

If something drastic was noted from the logging, invariably it would be failed hardware. Dying fuel pumps, blown diverter valves, leaky vac pipes etc The software has plenty of test miles under it's belt and it's unlikely that some new hardware combination is going to turn up now.

Fitting a FMIC will mean cooler intake temps so the ECU would not need to pull timing to compensate as often. The car would run fine on a standard cooler but obviously, heat will come into play sooner. The same with intakes, any improvement in breathing will make power, even if it's a small amount.

OK cool, Ive got a 3" downpipe to hiflow cat then stock to a straight through muffler (Middle muffler has been removed) I also have a shielded POD and a stock IC, based on the above, should I see a gain over the tune that I'm currently running?.

The current ECU is flashed with GIAC and has a chip adapter so the original can be swapped back in to the ECU if required, what would be the process to upgrade in this case, I've read your other thread about reinstalling the stock chip so would the swap back work in this case?

Do GIAC not have a stage 2 file for yours? Not trying to do myself out of a job but the adapter is likely to be an encryption board and will probably prevent me from flashing through it. Have a word with Tim.

I also have a 3 in dump pipe of the turbo.
I'm not actually sure about my chip being hard soldiered, not sure if thats what the previous owner told me or not, so I will also be checking the inside of my ECU also.
For some reason I thought that a tune cost heaps more.
If I did go for a FMIC but kept stock intake and bearing in mind that I already have a 3inch dump, what sort of power could I expect at phase/stage 2.

All of a sudden our daily that was not going to be modded much, may... well be modded a bit!

Cost me $370 from the States. I've got a few friends over there and one of them was coming home to visit his parents, so I got him to pick it up for me. I only just installed it yesterday so I'm looking forward to messing around with it to see what kinda functions it has.
