yeah pretty easy. sometimes they will get stuck but its normally due to rubbish being stuck in the thread, so can back it off and clean it and it goes fine. can normally do them by hand as there is no pressure on mine due to the helper springs being removed.

havnt done much to the bora for a while other then throw the roof racks and basket on to carry some wheel/tyres around.

started my next build for it tho.

    • BUMP!! Need veer opinions.. Is it a front coilover height difference thing?? Or a sub-frame thing??

      1. The veer wasn't there (didn't seem to be) over the last week since the whole GTI engine swap, aka: engine, ECU, gearbox, subframe, driveshafts, brakes, hubs, knuckles, etc, etc, were all transplanted into my car.

      2. The same amount of slight veer to the left WAS there with the old 1.6L engine, gearbox, subframe, etc.

      3. Also, the left passenger side wheel arch IS about 3.5mm higher than the drivers side.. even though I left it 4mm lower on the coilover thread ?!?!?!?!?! Is the drivers side just heavier??

What could be causing the veer to the left??

I wanted to get this sorted before getting the wheel alignment, as last time I got a wheel alignment done, they said there was nothing they could 'adjust' on this particular car to fix it (the veer) without spending over a grand on new bushing sets or something weird like that?!?!?!!?

I also want to set it how I want it (ride height etc) when I take it to them, and don't want to play with it to much after getting the wheel alignment done, and want to 'hopefully' leave that part alone for quite a while.

      • well have done a few bits and pieces lately...

today i went and got some 215-40-18 put on the front as i was rubbing... though the particular tyre(falken) seems to really have that stretched look even though the 225-40-18 was almost a vertical sidewall. Road noise and grip has improved drastically though so im happy.

Also it had been idling a little lame lately and seems to be a bit misfirish when cruising at 100KM. I had already done the plugs and scanned it and nothing came up. Fast forward a few weeks i took the battery and airbox out to give the engine bay a good clean and noticed that one of the 110AMP metal fuses on top of the battery was cracked and only just making contact. I rang the dealer immediately and ordered a fuse, since I have put it the car feels completely different. I suggest everyone check these fuses as they are cheap to replace and have a huge effect on drivability.

There is still one other issue im battling and would appreciate any help. The car has smelt oily since we got it. I have degreased it multiple times and the engine bay is nice and clean. I have also replaced the Cam Cover gasket as it was leaking but the smell is still there. Last thing i can think of is maybe a cracked/split PCV hose?? Any other ideas??

Honestly it could be anything ...

Assuming you've checked your tyre pressures, and double-checked the work you've done suspension-wise (and it's not something simple like more weight on one side of the car), I'd be getting a wheel alignment to rule that out.

          • I'd also check the lower control arm bushings etc. if they haven't been done - you can pick up refresh kits reasonably cheaply. (Go the uprated TT bushings though as they are firmer and last longer)

Yeah I've checked the tyre pressures all around, and had a very quick look at the large control arm bushings (the ones that split) and they seemed fine. The left side is still sitting about 3mm higher, so I'll take that wheel off and wind that coilover down a smidge to even it up. I will have another look at the bushings etc while I'm in there. After that, I can go get a wheel alignment today or Monday, just wasn't sure if that was a waste of money if it's something they can't fix (ie: have to do it again after I sort out the veer issue). The steering wheel is off centre after the whole engine swap, so it needs a wheel alignment anyway, so I'll get that done & get them to have a look around while they're in there...

Anyone know of a good place in Sydney for a wheel alignment?? C'mon, there has to be somewhere good!!

                      • coilovers are a pain to get it sitting exactly level.
friend of mine put them in his track car and tried to level them by weight (not visual) and said he just couldnt do it
I know my passenger side is wound down a touch more then my drivers, and it still sits a touch higher, seems to have corrected itself a bit lately tho...

Spinning wheels in Waterloo are a good mob I've dealt with them before.

                              • Just dropeed the beast off at Spinning Wheels, looks like it'll cost me a bit more than was expected, but I really feel that these guys will do great work on the car, in a more whole/complete way, even if it costs me double. ... See how they go...
