After waiting for the tow truck for over 4 hours, then another 1/2 hour before we left, we finally got it off to my mates' workshop.
To cut a long story short, he rang with the news that it was a cracked drive shaft. Hooray! Only $500 including the tow, not the whole 'couple-o-grand' that the gearbox could be. Expensive ($1300) and stressful weekend for the little golf.
Oh well, I now know what the vibration was!

yeah, sorry to hear. interesting that it played up after the timing belt..
did you support the engine when you took out the engine mount? to access the belt case/cover?
Geez mate that is bad news.
So what does the $500 driveshaft include ? New CVs etc ??
Have you considered 2nd hand ?
$110: towing,
$300 labour & parts initially,
$90 extra for the 'spline' or something?

so, from what I understand, it's the part of/after the drive shaft that goes into the gearbox, the spline? and the CV etc, out to the wheel, left side.
Sorry for highjacking the thread, when I'm better organised, I'll sort out my own build thread, and only put headlines & a link here in future.

changed the coolant temp sensor housing last night, all in all not a difficult job, except for cleaningup the 3 litres of coolant that spilt onto my floor.
old vs new
everything back together
also i noticed that i can build 2-3psi of boost in neutral, is that normal? the k03 never could do that
changed the coolant temp sensor housing last night,
Did you change the temp sensor and seal as well? I wanted to check/clean mine, and wondered if you should always replace the seal?
Thanks.

i changed the seal but not the sensor. the sensors only 12 months old so it should still be fine
cool, thanks.

not much really, i could see a tiny crack but it looked in okay shape, i guess it must've seen some really high pressure at lakeside haha. took it for a nice teat drive and all seemed fine, i think it needs some new plugs though.
just ordered some neuspeed race springs to solve my wheel arch gap a little. anybody have any experiwnce with adjustable sway bar end links, will they make the sway bar clear on a 50mm drop? or will i need to get a whole new sway bar??

there is no set rule if it will help or not.
id like to say yes, some longer end links should push it up enough, but dont quote me.
some guys have no problems on stock with a 50mm drop, others dont even get to 40mm.
