Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

  • VR6 Bora air con clutch

Anyone have a aircon compressor clutch from a Bora or golf mk4? My compressor has seized and only found out when I had it recharged so I'd like to swap out the clutch to see if that is the problem or the compressor is what has seized. I should be able to swap out the clutch without needing to evacuate or lose the gas.

Yes you can change just the clutch.
You should be able to test the clutch with a multimeter, i would expect it to have resistance of 2-5 ohms if it is working, high or low resistance or open circuit if it is stuffed.
    Clutch is actually a magnet.

Other tests would be to run engine with AC off, the centre of the pully should be stationary, then turn on AC the magnet should activate and the centre part would spin.

I did this years ago, replaced the magnet bit, then 4yrs later the compressor died. When I replaced the compressor I forgot to take the magnet out and binned the whole thing, or I would have had a spare.
