not to put a downer on this thread.... but i will..

i have tried a BIG pod many times on my car (about twice as long as your one) and it doesnt work nearly as well.... it just doesnt have the filter area that the OEM one does.

my mk3 is running 18psi with the intercooler fitted, and it will spike to about 20 - with the stock air filter.

when i put my big pod on, time after time after time, i lose about 1 - 1.5psi of boost.

just to let you know... i do however have a 80mm hole cut into the bottome of my airbox, with a pipe going down to the drivers side bumper scoop for a nice cool air charge into the airbox... i'm sure this makes everything work more nicely, but it doesnt affect boost.

Increased fuel consumption could easily be a sensor or similar Louis. Get your car scanned. i`ll do it for you if you fancy the drive.

Good use of bunning pipe though and nice writeup as usual.

Scanning huh? Don't suppose that is done through the connector plug that sits above the cigarette lighter? Cuz i saw it the other day and wondered what it was.

Will scanning reveal the fuel mapping and timing etc Loon?

Scanning reveals many wonderful little electrical/sensor/etc problems that you may not know about who has Vagcom in Sydney?

It has been a week and a bit since the mod. Not to my surprise, the "daily" fuel consumption remained the same. But when I did floor it around my block, The fuel did not reached as high as 17.5L/100 instead it was only 16~L/100. Also, when I do get stuck in traffic, it also did not reach as high as 22.5/L/100 but 18~L/100. The "daily" consumption remained 12.5L/100.

In conclusion, I think heat shielded filters would make no difference to fuel consumption but it provide minute power gain, possibly after a few drives the power gain was already inhibited.

The most significant difference is during heavy traffic. 18~L/100 instead of 22.5L/100. This could possibably be the result of excess heat in engine bay during idle.

Last word: OEM box as heat shield on fuel consumption for daily drive makes no difference but only provided minimal power gain.

I need a good vag com scan, 18L/100 in heavy traffic in my definition is still utterly unacceptable. From what I have gathered, my high fuel consumption, rough idle and black smoke in heavy throttle seem to be a "fuel burning rich" problem.

Wow the vr6 does chew some petrol! The new cl ive got does like 8l/100k's lol. At least now everything looks like factory, i despise open podfilters

Did you end up getting a scan tool onto it to see if you have a buggered sensor or 2? It could be as simple as a buggered Exhaust sensor. Get it done if you havn't, it may just save you some cash in the long run.

If you enclosed a pod, or took the pod downnn for colder air, would this incur the same result then?

Is your dad's territory only half an engine? I remember reading my mum's gauge in her territory and seeing like 20L/100km in traffic, and it didn't change much when she was driving for a while. I hate that car!

jeeze you lot must have heavy feet!

I recently did a test with my stock air box vs the CDA, but i couldn't find my old air filter, so it didn't work quite right, and also the CDA is an enclosed air filter anyway, but. The only thing i noticed moving away from the stock air box, was the spike in the power delivery from the CDA. as far as i could tell, and remember this was with no airfilter in the box, the consumption was the same, but i didn't drive far, too scared for the well being of the motor.

i catch public transport during the week so when i get into my car on the weekends i give it the boot and the most my average fuel goes up to is 11 normally 10.

I use an cotton green filter (same as K&N) insdie the std box but I've cut the bottom front half out...its given me some gains but i still feel power loss when the engine bay is warm...
