Alternator for 2.8 vr6 1995 help

The golfs alternator I think has crapped itself today after 20 years and of course its when I am about to start up work again the battery light came on not too long ago after I spotted some smoke coming from the enigne bay followed by some stinky fumes just wondering if anyone has had the same or similar problem and where to buy a new/reconditioned one locally around ipswich/Brisbane area other wise its another eBay job. Got a quote from Repco the other day for a new one and it was $398.

Didn't even see your reply thanks mate yeah I got one from a local auto electrician for around $350 the other week bolted it back in and seems like it's holding up getting the starter motor sorted now on problem after another.
