Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

The chrome moulding wraps around the whole rear bar. There's already an inlay in the bumpers for it that it sits nicely in but there's nothing along the doors and quarter so I'll probably leave it. I was on the fence about putting it on to start with, can always take it off I guess.

Well my VW wheel centers arrived, unfortunately they're not a straight slap on like I had hoped for. Seems like I need some kind of spring/retainer clip to hold them on. If any has any bright ideas feel free to post them up in this thread or over here - http://www.vwwatercooled.com/forums/...ps-105880.html

Not much interesting happening in VW land. I picked up a second hand VR6 grille as mine has a nice dent right in the middle of it, will need to paint that in future. I have a spare set of mk3 hubcap centres on the way thanks to a member on here, which I plan on mutilating so that I can retro fit my mk1 centres, will most likely be repainting the wheels once I get those on. I got some replacement LED bulbs for all the interior as I have a blown one in the dash/speedo, plus dat factory green is nasty so that'll be on the cards for a rainy day in future. And here's an experiment that I tried with some chrome auto vinyl wrap that actually turned out okay haha. eBay tells me a new grille badge is $80-90 (stuff that) so I got myself some vinyl wrap for $6 and wrapped a spare one that I had.

Good old eBay. Right here to be precise - Chrome Vinyl Wrap CAR Auto Roof Film Foil Premium A4 Sheet | eBay

Was a bit of a fiddly job, you need cut a square that's probably got at least 5cm around the edges so that you can grab it and really pull on it hard to stretch the vinyl over the rounded edges without having any creases or bubbles. Once that was all dandy I carefully cut out each section with a sharp razor blade.

My laptop & phone don't seem to like each other so I had to post pictures seperately ^^^

Been a bit quite on here as I moved place and didn't have internet for about 3 weeks but I've been pretty occupied with the move any how. Nothing drastic has happened really. Serviced the damn thing, oil & filter / fuel & air filters and I have some plugs to put in as well. Ive ordered a rocker cover gasket coz that's leaking as well. One of my dash lights was out so I got rid of the old smelly green defuser and popped in some nice bright LED's. I'm in the process of retro fitting the Mk1 centres by using a set of spare Mk3 centers, trimming them back to sit inside the Mk1s as they are smaller so they will be a simple pop on / off job. They are just sitting on in that picture so not completely centred and will be painting the rims gloss black when I get the time.

In other news my little brother joined the golf clan, got himself a '93 Cabriolet which is sitting in my garage at the moment so have done a little work on that as well. I'm sure he'll post a thread at some point.

                  Thanks,
                  Beau

I just took the bulbs out of the cluster and went to my local Jaycar and asked the guy there to match them up, $4.50 for 2 bulbs.

From what I remember it is only two up top.
You can change the LCD bulbs too, one for each, but you have to open the whole cluster to take the green film out. I just kept the colour but put two white LED bulbs in.

Yup it's two LED's up the top. You don't actually have to unplug and remove the cluster to get to them either. After having done it once I could do it to another in about 10 minutes, very simple job.

Well I suppose it's time for an update. I've since installed a basic sound system, new deck, 6" speakers for the front doors and a sub + amp combo in the boot (goodbye 50% of the already small boot space). I have a central locking and alarm kit that's still sitting in the garage waiting to go. If anyone can help me out with the factory wiring diagram that would be awesome! Seems my Mk3 has a basic central locking from factory (works by turning the key in the door but not remotely) so thinking of tapping into that as there should be factory actuators in the doors already which I would rather make use of than installing the ones from the kit.

Also replaced the rocker cover gasket which was leaking and gave the entire engine bay a real good degrease and pressure clean so that's looking heaps neater as well. I went to do the plugs a few weeks back but Repco sold me incorrect plugs, turns out they don't even have a listing? So I was going to get them online from the EK/EU but it's been 3 weeks and I still haven't ordered them ha. They don't need to be done, more so the fact that I have no idea when they were last done.

I also butchered my trade the other day and did a total DIY driveway job on repainting the factory wheels (painted them on the car haha) mainly because I don't have 4 jack stands and didn't want to do half the job at a time. The original silver was falling apart and had been planning on painting them black any way.

Painting the wheels gave me the nudge I needed to fit the Mk1 centre caps that I've had for a while now. I got myself an extra set of the Mk3 centers which I trimmed down and Sikaflex'd them to hell and back. So far they haven't flown off down the road.

Here's how it looks with the center caps - I might have Photoshopped the ride height to how I would like it to be. The Australian dollar continues to worsen which has put me off ordering them for now but it's begging for dem lows so I'll probably be ordering some shortly.

Also thinking of building a wooden roof basket as the roof racks are here to stay. Have also been thinking of wrap around venetians like this,

I would either have to build these myself as I can't find any where that even makes tailgate Venetians for a Mk3 let alone side windows. The alternative and easiest option would be to find some second hand ones from a similar sized car and modify them to suit. I'm sure the direction I'm taking with this isn't everyone's cup of tea but I like the idea of having some thing different.

                              Cheers,
                              Beau
