Welcome to the new look VWWatercooled

After much work and little sleep there is a new version of the forums running on more powerful and recent hardware as well as an upgraded software platform.

Things are mostly the same, but some things are a little different. We will be learning together, so please post questions (and answers if you've worked things out) in the help thread.

The new forum software is an upgraded version of what came before, it's mostly the same but also a little different. Hopefully easier to use and more stable than before. We are learning together here, so please be patient. If you have questions, please post them here. If you have worked something out and can provide an answer,

    Ahoy there,

This is my first golf (volkswagen as well actually) so this is new territory for me. I picked it up just the other day for what I thought was a good deal from a desperate seller - $1800 with fresh rego & 150xxx km on the clock. Overall pretty neat bar a few odd small dings.

It had been sitting for a few months from the previous owner so I gave it a good scrub today and it came up alright.

    Thanks,
    Beau

Thanks guys, I'm pretty happy with it!

The bumpers have seen better days paint wise so will be buffing back what I can but the tops of the bumpers are looking a little too far gone so I was thinking of painting the top section black like the GTI? bumpers. I'm hopefully the middle portion can be brought back, I really can't be bothered painting them lol (I'm a trade qualified spraypainter). I have 2 days off this week coming so I'll be buffing the whole car and pulling off some grandad gear like the headlight covers, roof racks and tow bar. I should probably service it befor winter kicks in properly. Other things on the list though...

            - Coilovers - hooray for cheap UK coils
            - Whitewalls (already in the post) also on the hunt for some VW smoothie hub caps
            - Blacken out wheel arches
            - Basic audio setup, I have a spare 12" sub and amp kicking around.
            - Central locking & alarm kit
            - Tint... maybe

I might eventually slap some rims on it, see how we go. Will post pictures as I get on.

            Thanks!
            Beau

just don't do anything too permanent to the car, these 3 doors need to be cherished as they're starting to become hard to come by.
like my neighbour who welded his roofracks onto his 3 door mk3

Oddly enough, the ad was linked on these forums before.
Found something interesting on eBay or Gumtree (or somewhere else)? Share it here.

so, are those roof racks permanently mounted?

Don't worry, main things will be coilovers and wheels. All the rest will be to tidy the car up and small creature comforts like a decent set of speakers.

Not sure, I started running out of sun by the time I had a look and turns out it they are square allen key heads rather than standard, which I don't think I have a set for. I'm hoping the only bolt (that I can see) is purely to hold the main beam to the mounts and that they are only held with some kind of glue or double sided tape. The roof lining is sagging which is making me think it may have been removed before to drill some disgusting big holes for the roof racks :'( I'll find out soon enough.

In other news, the previous owner definitely had a small dog with white wispy hair and he definitely let it come for drives. I spent a fair amount of time detailing the interior and I'm pretty happy with it now. The top of the steering wheel is starting to break up a little so I shoved on a cover - which doesn't fit properly, thanks super cheap haha.

Blackened out the wheel wells, factory over spray was bugging me. You can also see what I mean about the faded bumpers. The middle section will be fine but the tops are starting to let go so they will be painted soon.

And lastly I 'installed' some super awesome solar power bobble heads from my recent trip to Japan

Still waiting on cutting compound and my buffer in the mail. Hoping that will all be here this week as I have a few days off and want to get any painting done before it starts raining regularly.

Also does any one know where I can get a set of these VW center hubcaps?

Or alternatively what type of VW are these off? I know they are 14" and will pop straight on, I'd just like to find a set in Perth rather than the states. Although I do have a major preference for the ones above.

                      Thanks,
                      Beau

I think those racks will be riveted to the roof unfortunately.

I don't think they are riveted, there's a single allen key bolt on either side. Either way I'm positive they are directly mounted to the roof. They're actually growing on me which is kind of weird.

Well my cutting compound came yesterday but I'm still waiting on my buffer so that I can fix up the front and rear bumper. In the mean time I used the spoiler as a test piece.

Will be doing the lower lip on the front and rear bars, side moldings and also the top section of the bumpers once I've cleaned them up. I might also do the front grille and tidy up the badges.

And my whitewalls came in the post all the way from Turkey. Some how these came before any thing that I've ordered from the eastern states.

Just a bit lower to fix the black gap and maybe 20mm spacer on the back and I reckon this thing will look sweet as!
