OMG! Exploded air something! HELP!!

SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!!! I have no idea what the hell caused this, but here's what happened:

My mate was sitting in the drivers seat (don't ask..) and was fiddling with the keys in the ignition. in 1st gear, not on, handbrake applied. for some STUPID reason he "accidently" turned the key and it jolted forward as it was in gear, then we heard a massive BANG. I thought it was a backfire or something, I had a panic attack popped up the boot didn't know what to look for etc etc..

After I looked underneath the car and found many small pieces of exploded plastic, I worried more, and eventually found my problem. THIS:



I took one look at it and swore. Loudly. "Something to do with my airbox blew up! What the F@#K?!?!"

I couldn't believe it! It blew up because the car jolted!
Stupidly, I turned the engine on...it was idling so badly..shuddering, couldn't keep steady, constantly almost dropping out. after just touching the accelerator pedal, it revved real high then dropped out completely.

This is obviously a big problem. AND it needs to be taken to my mechanic for a bloody hose on wednesday, so I need it fixed before that. I guess what I need to ask you all here is....explain, help, something?!?!

That's the muffler for the Idle control valve

Hey.. Not such a big deal.

That plastic can is the noise damper for the idle control valve.

As part of installing a Schrick Manifold it is recommended that you remove and bypass this part. I have done this on my car when I installed my Schrick manifold and it's fine.

This is step 6 on the link below... As I said don't worry about it. You could get a replacement but you could also bypass it. Your choice...

6. "Mount the throttle body cable bracket to the intake. Detach the noise damper of the idle control valve (where present) and connect to the idle control valve directly to the air throttle body adapter/distributor. (OBD I Only)"

Sorry, newbie=me, where is it? It hasn't bloody blown up from the picture, has it? I've got different angles if you can't see it

Looking at this pic ... it definitely has blown up...



These pieces are the remains of your noise damper.

As I said you can by pass it but if you don't feel confident maybe getting it towed to your mechanic is the best option. Good luck...

sorry I meant has the idle control valve blown up..please don't say that's the same thing cause i assumed it was different

Your idle control valve is under the black plastic cover that holds you spark plug wires in place... You have to remove this to see it... It a fat aluminum tube shaped object...

That thing is an oil catch can thing. I hve never seen one blow up, must have been a big backfire.
Bypass it and she`ll be right.

From what I have been told this is a commonly broken part with most people bypassing it rather than fixing it

Your car is OBD2... The "muffler" is only on the OBD1 cars....

Lol yeah um. How do I bypass it? It needs to be fixed, today!
