    • Heat wrap would quieten it down.

I'd probably recommend it, given that there's a few things in close proximity that wouldn't take kindly to the heat the extractors generate.

          • Heater core is done! Got to be one of the worst jobs on a mk3 ever... It's literally like delving into the centre of Doctor Who's tardis to find the bloody thing. All done though and have heat. Albeit with some funny smells but hopefully that'll wear off in time.

            Happy snaps

            Old Core

I did it without drilling out steering columns and degassing AC etc. If I had the time and money I would've degassed the AC as it makes it easier to get the core out but I'm stingy and just shifter the reo bar out about 3 inches and undid all the clips that attach it to the evaporator box. Appears to have gone alright! Only time will tell though.

Also recovered heaps of the wiring loom with new foam and clean up areas you would never see usually!

Nugget is now a 100% Functioning 1997 VR6. EVERYTHING, yes EVERYTHING, works (touch wood haha).

              • You sir are a crazy bastard... but I love it! I miss my VR6 and keep thinking about snapping up another one to tinker with before they get too "classic" (read expensive). Keep up the great work!

If it has an engine or heartbeat it's going to cost you.

Yeh it sounded dodgy to me hey... Sorry I kinda ignored your advice on the AC degas. I'm sure it wouldve been easier to just pull the whole thing out but I'm really too stingy to pay the $200 bucks for a regas (Ive heard its gone up from $150 since the carbon tax came into play) so I just spent the extra hour or two manoeuvring the box into a position that was good enough to get the core out.

Yeh chances are i'll hardly use it as it takes too long to warm up anyway. The worst part is getting in the car first thing on a winters morning and a heatercore doesnt really help in those first few minutes! But I guess that wasn't really the point. Just like to be able to say its one of the ones that actually works!

Cheers man. Its one hell of a job but not super difficult if you just take it easy and have some patience in total it was about a 12 hour job for me. That included fiddling with some subwoofer wiring and tidying up the crappy wiring loom foam!

                    • Is there no guard indicator on the one with the roof racks or is it just hiding in that pic

Good stuff on the heater core too! Looks like one hell of a job

Well picked! They appear to be Euro guards or something. No repairs or anything and both guards are not original, you can see that all the sealant has been cut. Need to straighten them up...

Yep sure was. Still not 100% happy as it smells funny but atleast I have a little heat on the mildly cold Brisbane mornings

                        • I think you'd probably find they're US spec guards as they're side lights are on the side of front bumper. I like it a lot, subtle shave type look.

yeah definitely US if theres no signs of welding on the back of them, all Australia mk3s are euro spec

                              • Speaking of guards, my left one seems to be bulging out in the middle where it meets the door and isnt aligned properly with the door, any idea on how to adjust them? I have tried shifting the door but no luck there
